My sleep is finally back n synch!
How did I get here? Well.... Up at 4:30am (GMT), to Maidenhead, taxi to Heathrow, check in. Unsucessful Search for a Body Shop to find some White musk Shower gel. Oh look! Elle Mc Pherson at the check in with a floppy hat to die for, report back to work collegues said sighting - 'Did you go up to her and say I'm in love with you and want to marry you?'
'No - she had two kids with her and to be honest I'm not ready to take on that sort of commitiment - you never know she may have said yes'.
In flight entertainment bearing no relation to the guide they give you. Saw 'Closer', which most people have been going on about. I didn't think much of it. OK at best. Lots of Adult type relationship things. It basically revolves there being 4 people who swap relationships. The hinge being Julia Roberts playing a very 'Talented, beautiful and yes you've guessed it Complicated Photographer' who gets together with Jude Law, who's seeing Natalie - sorry not seeing, they're 'in love' though you'd never guess it. Just like it fails to convince when Jude dumps her for Julia because 'They're in love'. Julia then has to dump Clive Owen who she met after Jude sets them up as a practical joke on a blind date.
Julia then has to get divorced from Clive but they shag and she then decides she still loves Clive and because she is so 'complicated', she can do this. Jude sees Clive who in the interim has gone to a lap dancing club where he sees Natalie. She dances for him, they shag. Back to Jude and clive. Clive points Jude back in the direction of Natalie, who Jude is now 'in Love' again with because Julia has complicated things by being back in love with Clive even though she tries to divorce him because she is 'in love' with Jude, but that's Ok because she's been really hurt before and her ex hit her.... which Clive would never do because he's not like that and besides, he's in love with her even if she is 'complicated'. However she may well have made the right decision in the end because when Jude and Natalie get back together and they seem really happy because they are 'in love', Natalie drops the bomb shell on Jude telling him that she shagged clive (which Jude knew already but wanted her to say it) and that she didn't love Jude. Jude almost hits her. She asks Jude to hit her because she too is complicated. so he does.
Jude then finds out her name is made up (which complicates things even further) and nobody cares - least of all me.
Much more interesting was the TV film about Peter Cook and Dudley Moore starring Rhys Ifan as Peter Cook. Although I was convinced for at least an hour that they got Jarvis Cocker to Play Alan Bennett throughout the Beyond the fringe part of the film.
We land in Toronto - I'm cuttingit fine for my train connection to windsor, Ontario where my Cousin Gillian is to meet me. I drink loads of Ginand tonic and eventually make it - whereupon I meet Gillian (who is 41) and her boyfriend Bob, a Maths Professor who is 57.
More of this later, but for the moment just know that Bob wears plaid and is a legend.
Met Gillian's eldest Tommy, who I didn't recognise and chatted about Danny who is about 100 miles away at university studying english and Philosophy. Like me his favourite pop star at the moment is Plath.
Woke this morning reading Plath in bed and listening to echo and the Bunnymen. Breakfast was spent with Bob and Gillian discussing our impending visit to the Mowtown Museum (Bob is American, 57 and has never heard of Marvin Gaye), a maths problem Gillian has to do for her enginerring degree assignment and Contra dancing. We go to a contra dance tonight. It's supposidly like line dancing on speed.
I've no idea what I've let myself in for, but I can't wait to find out.
I'm just really grateful to be this happy. I haven't been like this in a while. I know it won't last but I think the valuable lesson here is whatever happiness is, if you keep it simple you stand a better chance of finding it.
Don't let it get..... complicated.
Right, I have a 57 Year Old Maths Professor to attend to. We have to learn the dance routine to Baby Love before we get to Mowtown.
