some character/writing meme thing

1. Tell us about your favorite writing project/universe that you’ve worked with and why.
I dunno, I haven't worked on many and the ones I have, enjoy most of them, I guess?

There's one I'm working on right now that I'm contemplating turning into a Quest game of sorts (like Ruby Quest). It's obviously inspired by Homestuck, which in turn was inspired by a lot of text-based games, which I've kind of been interested in lately. But I'm trying not to make it a ripoff... most of the similarities are that it has kind of an "urban RPG" setting (which I also love) and much of the early communication will be through text/chatlogs. But mine has far different characters, and the overall tone of the story is darker, I guess.

Anyway, I'm having a lot of fun developing that one because I'm really liking how the characters and plotting are turning out so far, and it's really, really fun to write chatlogs. Dialogue seems a lot more personal when it's said over the internet and it's fun to try out several different typing styles and see how the characters play off each other. Now I understand why Andrew Hussie writes all those super tl;dr pesterlogs. They're FUN.

2. How many characters do you have? Do you prefer males or females?
Oh god, way too many. I think only about 25 or so are really well-developed at this point, though.
I have this terrible habit of having way too many female characters, but all of the main ones are male. Lately I've been trying to be better about that, though. Some of my more recent ideas have several MCs or female MCs.

3. How do you come up with names, for characters (and for places if you’re writ ing about fictional places)?
Uhhhh it depends! For stories set in modern times I raid babynames.com. Usually I already have an idea of what letter I want it to start with and then I just pick one that appeals to me.

For fantasy stories I just toss around sounds in my head until I come up with something that sounds cool.

4. Tell us about one of your first stories/characters!
Oh dear god.

The first "serious" story I had was this shitty magical girl comic about an alien princess who turned into a dragon.

It was unbelievably terrible and once I came up with something better I dropped it and god I am SO glad I didn't have much access to the internet during that time.

5. By age, who is your youngest character? Oldest? How about “youngest” and “oldest” in terms of when you created them?
Hmm, I'm not sure. Most of my oldest characters are minor characters, and they're usually in their 30's/40's.

I think my youngest in terms of age is about 7. Mentally, at least.

Oldest in terms of creation is Kora. She got recycled from aforementioned shitty magical girl comic because I liked her.

Youngest is SkullQ, I think.

6. Where are you most com fort able writing? At what time of day? Computer or good ol’ pen and paper?
I like typing stuff out because it's faster and less of a pain. And I always end up doing a lot of stuff in the afternoon or evening.

7. Do you listen to music while you write? What kind? Are there any songs you like to relate/apply to your characters?
I listen to music basically all the time. There are also a few songs that I think apply to some of my characters really well.

I listen to podcasts sometimes as well, but only when I'm working on art, NOT writing. I can't concentrate on both at the same time, but I can do artwork and listen to the people talking at the same time pretty well.

8. What’s your favorite genre to write? To read?
I will read anything, but I have a soft-spot for "urban fantasy", I guess you would call it, like I said earlier. Things where bizarre stuff happens in an otherwise normal world.

That said I also like sci-fi and a little horror. I need to read more horror. :l

I also like bizarre philosophical stories. You know, "deep" stuff, like 1984 or Lord of Flies, things like that. I love stories that talk about the nature of humanity and personal freedom and the collapse of civilization.

Basically THINGS THAT ARE FUCKED UP

9. How do you get ideas for your characters? Describe the process of creating them.
It depends! Some are inspired by existing characters, some are just random designs I draw and then decide to turn into a character. Kimasu is an example of the first (he's based on a lot of the tsundere shota types I like so much) and Peace is the second (she was just kind of a random character but I've started developing her more and making her part of a story). With that recent story I mentioned, a lot of the characters started as faceless usernames but as I started out typing chatlogs between them they started to turn into real people in my head. It's kind of interesting how they turned out.

10. What are some really weird situations your characters have been in? Every thing from serious canon scenes to meme questions counts!
Uhhhh
Everything they do would be considered weird. *shrug*

11. Who is your favorite character to write? Least favorite?
I have a hard time writing super serious or nasty characters. I have no problem with characters that are nasty in a SARCASTIC way. But just mean for no reason? Yeah, I can't do that shit. Or people who can't take a joke. Personally I'm pretty adaptable and roll with basically anything, so people who can't do that are just a mystery to me!

I love writing snarky characters and silly characters, especially if the silly characters have enough of a backbone to play along with the snarkers. So the jerkwad friend and the nice, loyal friend who is totally used to their bullshit. That is my favorite dynamic.

12. In what story did you feel you did the best job of world building? Any side-notes on it you’d like to share?
One that I recently started working on. Although that doesn't really count, because it's based on my dreams. So... maybe it does count? Whatever.

Anyway I think I'm kind of terrible at world-building.

13. What’s your favorite culture to write, fictional or not?
Teen culture. Does that count? Just like. Shopping, shallow relationships, technology, television, pop culture... it's fun to write about that stuff.

14. How do you map out locations, if needed? Do you have any to show us?
I AM SO BAD AT THIS SHIT. I keep meaning to make maps but I never do. It's basically all in my head, and even then it's always disorganized and makes no sense.

15. Mid way question! Tell us about a writer you admire, whether professional or not!
I like Andrew Hussie's writing, the man is amazing at tying together loose ends with STYLE.
And I like Kiyohiko Azuma's stories, they're always really funny and easy to relate to. Yotsuba&! succeeds even more in that respect than Azumanga Daioh did, imo.

16. Do you write romantic relationships? How do you do with those, and how “far” are you willing to go in your writing? ;)
I LOVE ROMANCE AW YEEEAAAHHH
I haven't gotten to any yet in my stories but once I do they will probably stop at hinted sex scenes. I prefer building up a relationship gradually.

17. Favorite protagonist and why!
Ummmm I guess Mao. And another girl from the Quest-ish story I'm developing, Janice. I just love cutesy girl characters! They just happen to be cutesy in different ways...

18. Favorite antagonist and why!
Hmm... From my silly fairy tale witches story, Poison Blue, there's a character called Lapin. She is super bitch and I love her.

19. Favorite minor that decided to shove him self into the spot light and why!
Mao used to be minor and then I dunno something just happened, it was weird.

20. What are your favorite character interactions to write?
Like I said, snarky friend/happy friend. I love the way characters like that bounce off each other. Snarky friend would be like "fuck you" and happy friend would be all "dinner first :)" and they would just constantly troll each other, it's so great.

21. Do any of your characters have children? How well do you write them?
Most of my characters are pretty young so... I don't know?
I have a few "future kids" that probably won't show up past an epilogue or bonus chapter or something, and i think I do a decent job with them.

22. Tell us about one scene between your characters that you’ve never written or told any one about before! Serious or not.
Kora Pilaka and Pafeko have a threesome
THE END

23. How long does it usually take you to complete an entire story-from planning to writing to posting (if you post your work)?
PFFFFFFFT THIS IS A FUNNY QUESTION HAHAHAHA

Kimeral has been going for two years, in development for 7 (still in development, really) and it won't end for quite a while. That's not even taking into account my 6+ other stories of varying lengths and complexity that I've been working on over the years (The oldest ones besides Kimeral being GOATS and Innocentors). So. Yeah. :l

24. How willing are you to kill your characters if the plot so demands it? What’s the most interesting way you’ve killed someone?
Depends. I've contemplated killing off characters before but usually decide against it for a variety of reasons.
There definitely will be character death, though.

25. Do any of your characters have pets? Tell us about them.
Melau has a female gryphon, one of the characters from GOATS who I haven't fully developed yet has a dog, and the twins from It's Not As Bad As You Think It Is have a cat. That's all I can think of at the moment.

26. Let’s talk art! Do you draw your characters? Do others draw them? Pick one of your OCs and post your favorite picture of him!
Oh yeah I draw them all the time lol. Comics, after all.

SkullQ. I don't do many finished pictures of her but I have a lot of doodles.

27. Along similar lines, do appearances play a big role in your stories? Tell us about them, or if not, how you go about designing your characters.
Eh. I just try to give them designs that fit their personalities. Or personalities that fit their designs. Whatever.

28. Have you ever written a character with physical or mental disabilities? Describe them, and if there’s nothing major to speak of, tell us a few smaller ones.
Uhh... not that I can think of, actually! Huh.
I do have a few characters with terrible vision and one or two with self-esteem problems/depression. But that's about it.
Oh, I do have one character that's blind in one eye, but I don't think that counts.

29. How often do you think about writing? Ever come across some thing IRL that reminds you of your story/characters?
I write pretty often lately. When I'm not writing I just brainstorm. So in a way I guess i am writing all the time!

30. Final question! Tag some one! And tell us what you like about that per son as a writer and/or about one of his/her characters!
NO.

stupid shit, memes
