Damon & Elena - The Next Chapter; Why SE fans should be worried.
I started writing this as an angry rant - as my declaration of intent as a disgruntled fan, and my outrage over the events of the finale. Then it turned into something else - hope.

Like you said, if Elena had chosen Damon in the finale, I would have been waiting for things to go wrong. And they would have gone wrong. Because there's no way the writers could have maintained a happy relationship between them for 3 seasons without any bumps in the road.
I'm not too happy that Elena's still in love with Stefan, but given that she is (for now), I don't want her stringing Damon along, so in that sense, I'm glad she made the choice she did.
The fact that we're going to see Stefan and Elena be together for a while next season doesn't upset me too much - honestly, I'd be more upset if she chose Stefan in the finale, and then immediately ditched him once she turns. If she did that, I think that would show that she doesn't still love him, and that would totally undermine the choice she made. Also, I don't think "for a while" necessarily means for a long while.
Finally, I think there were definitely signs of hope in the finale, even if they were a little fleeting. The most notable, for me, being Elena's "I can't think about always. All I can think about is right now." Because as Damon himself said earlier in the season, "It's right, just not right now.". And at least she's no longer hanging on to "It will always be Stefan.".
Anyway, those are just my humble thoughts about why there definitely still is reason to have hope :).
