CHARACTER NAME: Sokka
FANDOM: Avatar: the Last Airbender
CHRONOLOGY: post canon
CLASS: Hero
SUPERHERO NAME: N/A
ALTER EGO: Sokka!
BACKGROUND:
World: The Avatar World is made up of four nations: The Water Tribe(s), The Earth Kingdom, The Air Temples, and the Fire Nation. Every generation one Avatar is born to one of the nations, in order of the four seasons (Water - Winter, Earth - Spring, Fire - Summer, Air - Fall). Each Nation has a "skill" bestowed to some of their people, presumably by genetics. This is the ability to 'bend' their given element. But the Avatar is the only person who can successfully bend all four elements.
They were always meant to remain separate, but then the Fire Nation attacked. After Fire Nation Avatar Roku died, they knew a new Avatar would be born to the Air Nomads and committed genocide, slaughtering all of them and destroying the Air Temples. Unbeknowst to them, a small monk who was not yet fully realized as the Avatar had been trapped inside a block of ice, and would not resurface for another 100 years.
In addition, this world is vaguely primative and uses only bending as technology. The most developed Nation is the Earth Kingdom, because practiced earth benders were able to mold actual cities using this skill. The Fire Nation quickly realizes this and enslaves the earth benders to cultivate and realize the Fire Nation to be almost as advanced. The Water Tribes were raided and the water benders stolen and put into internment camps, as they were viewed as the biggest threat and natural enemy to the devastating power of the fire bender.
The Southern Water Tribe (at the South Pole) had all of its benders stolen, but the more difficult to traverse Northern Water Tribe (North Pole) has been spared to some degree and still exists in relative harmony (Until Book 1: Water).
History: When Sokka and his sister Katara were young, the Fire Nation attacked their village in the Southern Water Tribe. They were in search of the one remaining water bender rumored to be hiding there. The General took Sokka's mother and demanded to know who was the water bender, and her family would be spared. Knowing that her daughter, Katara, was indeed the last remaining water bender of the Southern Water Tribe, she lied and said it was her. He killed Sokka's mother and shortly thereafter Sokka's father led their tribe into battle against the Fire Nation. Sokka and Katara were raised by their Gran until the fateful day when they discovered the Avatar frozen in the ice. A small boy from the Air Nomads named Aang.
From there on, he traveled with Aang and Katara as she helped the Avatar to master waterbending, while learning a thing or two herself. The trio (plus Aang's air bison Appa) are constantly under attack from exiled Fire Prince Zuko, who must capture the Avatar in order to get back into his father, Fire Lord Ozai's good graces. They fly to the Air Nomads to show Aang what's come of his people. He goes into the Avatar state and almost kills them all, but Katara manages to get him under control. They also gain a new addition to their party, Momo the gliding lemur.
They go to the North Pole to learn water bending, and Aang joins the water bending class there under Master Pakku. Katara expresses her interest in training alongside him, but Paku refuses, saying that women are forbidden to practice bending in the North Pole. Katara trains under Aang instead by nightfall by Sokka's suggestion, while he begins to attempt courting the Northern Tribe Princess, Yue. They fall in love, but Yue confesses she's engaged and says she can never be with Sokka. Shortly after, she sacrifices her life on Earth to become the moon spirit after [Tui] was killed by Zhao (Zuko's Fire Nation rival). Though this devastates Sokka, he regroups and carries on.
In following the seasonal order in which Aang must learn the elements, the next Nation they visit is the Earth Kingdom. They also gain another member of their group there, Toph, who helps Aang master earth-bending. She is the only known metal bender, but she is also blind, and can only see with the aid of her gift. (This is similar to the way Daredevil "sees" for reference.)
In Book 3, Sokka learns under Fire Nation swordsmaster, Pian Dao. After a meteor crashes to Earth, Toph and Aang help him bring it and he forges a space sword from it. At the end of his training, Pian Dao admits that he knew Sokka was from the Water Tribe all along, but rather than turn him in he merely tells him that people from all over deserve to learn the sword and should do. And also that 'Ping' is a very popular name in the Fire Nation he could've used instead of 'Sokka.' [This implies that it's a very Water Tribe sounding name that probably wouldn't be found anywhere else on the Avatar world.]
Sokka is reunited with his father, Hakoda, who briefly joins their cause. Hakoda and Sokka discuss the oncoming eclipse that will shelter the Sun for 7 minutes. The Water troops and a mixture of other soldiers attack to distract the Fire army while the Gaang infiltrates the Fire Palace. The idea is that while the Fire Lord is powerless Aang can defeat him without firebending. Unfortunately, they were expecting the attack and Azula comes to greet them instead, keeping them occupied while Ozai is tucked safely away.
While this is going on, Zuko has the final falling out with his father and storms out of the palace to join the Avatar's cause. Zuko tells the Gaang of Sozen's comet, which will strengthen all of the firebenders in its wake, and warns that Aang should defeat the Fire Lord before then. Though they're all initially suspicious of Zuko's motives, especially after he accidentally burns Toph's feet, they let him join their cause and he leads them to his family's beach house on Ember Island, knowing his father will never look there and they can stay safely to train.
Sokka's father was captured during the Day of Black Sun (the eclipse), and he nonchalantly asks Zuko where the Fire Nation keeps their captives. Zuko tells him of the Boiling Rock, where all prisoners of war eventually end up: it's basically like Alcatraz, an island surrounded by boiling water impossible to escape from. But he's undeterred by that and tries to sneak away in the middle of the night. Zuko suspects he might be up to something like that and is waiting for him. The two boys take Zuko's war balloon to save Hakoda, without telling the rest of the group.
They crash their balloon and impersonate guards, only to discover Hakoda isn't there. Suki is though, a Kyoshi warrior met briefly before who Sokka is infatuated with. He goes to her cell and reveals himself and they kiss. He begins plotting to break her out instead, praying his dad will get there with the next ship of prisoners. Always one for brilliant schemes, Sokka discovers the "ice box" a place they take traitors so they can't fire bend. He devises a plan to knock the ice box into the boiling river, using it as a boat to get to safety. When their plan is breached by a few prisoners, they have to leave before the next load of prisoners comes or they'll get left behind. Sokka wants Zuko and Suki to leave without him, but they stay loyal and stick by his side. And sure enough, Hakoda arrives soon after. The prisoners who escape in the ice box get caught and Zuko and Sokka come up with a new plan: they'll highjack the trolley with the new prisoners, and take the warden as collateral.
Eventually escaping when Zuko's girlfriend stands up against his sister, Azula -- and distracting from the guard's plan to simply cut the zipline, they escape.
At last, Aang defeats Ozai, but he does so by taking away his fire-bending rather than killing him, again exhibiting an exceptional show of mercy that Sokka almost doesn't understand, but most certainly respects. Zuko defeats his sister and takes the crown that was rightfully his, restoring all to be [mostly] right with the world.
Katara: Katara is the most important person in his life. She's his little sister by about a year, but she really acts like his mother most of the time. He admits to Toph one time (Katara overhears but never tells either of them) that he sometimes forgets what his mother's face looks like since she died when he was very young. Katara has always filled that role and most of the time he just sees her face. She fills that caregiver role and he is immensely codependent on her. He will have a difficult time adapting to the City without her. Though they often bicker like normal siblings, their bond is much deeper and always prevails. And though Katara takes care of him, Sokka also wants to protect her as he feels a big brother should, and is upset when Jet seems to have a thing for her as he's a "bad boy." Whereas when she switches focus to Aang it doesn't seem to phase him at all, as Aang is his best bro.
Hakoda: Though he didn't really grow up with his father, they bond again easily later in life and Hakoda is proud of the man he's become. It's clear that Hakoda's guilt is high, that he had to leave his children behind for the war, but he couldn't be more amazed by the people they've become. Though ice dodging is something young boys do to enter into manhood in the Water Tribe, Hakoda takes Sokka anyway, since he never got a chance. It's something you only get to do with your father. Sokka cherishes this moment and carries it with him when he needs to part ways with his father again. Hakoda and Sokka also share a penchant for lame jokes and bond over this while everyone else groans at their terrible puns.
Aang: Aang is, easily, Sokka's best friend. Over the three seasons depicted in Avatar, the two grow closer until they're more or less brothers. They're definitely family and would do anything for one another. Whenever Aang is having a rough time, Sokka will tease him or try to cheer him up with humor, and it's easy to see he hates seeing the other boy upset. Sokka knows he's not a bender like the rest of the Gaang and that Aang could easily brush him off, but Aang always has respected him and treated him as every bit as important as his sister, and that matters to Sokka the most.
Toph: Toph is a subject of a lot of Sokka's jokes, but she takes it in stride and is quickly thought of by the Gaang as "one of the boys" whereas Katara never gets to that status. She makes stupid jokes and does "boy things" with them, and earns Sokka's respect over time though he's initially unsure of her. She comes to be a confidant of his, and someone he can trust implicitly and even though she's a girl they pretty much have a broship.
Zuko: Though the Gaang hates Zuko in Books 1 and 2, and the hate is mutual. When he approaches them and offers to teach Aang firebending, Sokka and Katara remain the most suspicious. Despite the fact that Zuko tried to kidnap Aang and accidentally burnt Toph, these two forgive him much more easily. But because Aang trusts the siblings judgment he remains staunchly against Zuko until Sokka comes around. After spending some time with Zuko, he finds out that the guy isn't so bad and after some initial awkwardness the two become close friends on the way to the Boiling Rock. And from there on out, Sokka would vouch for Zuko no matter what, considering him a great and loyal friend.
Yue: Though Sokka only knew Yue for a short period of time, he instantly fell for her. He's only 14 when he meets her, and at that age it's easy to feel overpowered by those feelings and feel like you could never love another. After Yue dies, Sokka looks to the moon for guidance, knowing that she's always looking down on him and keeping close watch.
Suki: Suki is a much more complex romantical relationship, one that undoubtedly gets physical one night at camp. Suki is a brave and fiercely stubborn girl, and what attracts Sokka to her is the challenge. Suki could (and has) kicked his ass but that only adds to her appeal, and shows him a greater respect for women from that point on. Suki also becomes uncharacteristically sweet around Sokka, like when he makes a crazy sand sculpture of her that looks nothing like her, and she just finds it endearing.
PERSONALITY:
Sokka is loud, and doesn't hesitate to share his opinion, but he gets nervous quite easily. If his friends or family are truly in danger, however, his true colors show and his bravery comes forth. He is a strong warrior at heart and will do anything to protect his sister and his friends. He is loyal to a fault, though initially suspicious of new people. Master Pian Dao describes Sokka as having, "A heart as strong as a lion-turtle, and twice as big." Though he can often seem petty or jealous of his sister's water-bending abilities, he only wants to be able to help and as he learns his own worth his confidence builds.
He does this by adding to the team with his extreme deductive skill. For such a young man, he really is quite intelligent and mature, he just covers it by being silly a lot of the time. It's really a scapegoat for some of his heavier emotions and it serves the double benefit of cheering his friends. When he goes off to train with Pian Dao his friends mourn his leaving and begin trying to make "Sokka jokes" in his absence. Though he often thinks of himself as the "extra" having no bending abilities, he's pleased to find that he really has a place in the Gaang and is an integral part of the reason they function.
When the Gaang has a brief stay over in a village full of people from the Earth Kingdom, Sokka finds his niche talking science with their leader, who actually is forced to develop weapons for the Fire Nation. Sokka is actually the developer of the War Balloon employed by the Fire Nation later on in the series, because the Fire Army takes it after the weapons designer and himself write the blueprints. Other than this though, Sokka truly has a penchant for physics and regards logic above all else. Though Avatar has a simplistic world construct, Sokka seems to comprehend things at a higher mechanical level, and Aang often refers to him as a genius (though sometimes in jest).
Though he's silly and puts a lot of love into his jokes and storytelling, Sokka can be a really intense guy. He was brought up to be a warrior above all else, and always protect those weaker than himself. In Book 1 we see the Water Tribe children all look up to him and rely on him for advice, and he begins prepping them in case they need to go to war some day. He's an immensely caring individual and though he would support the decision to kill another person if it would benefit the world overall he also has a huge heart and capacity for forgiveness (see: Zuko).
Most of all, he supports his friends and family no matter what they decide to do, and though he can be petty or argumentative, his love and desire for them to be happy will always supersede his urge to be right all the time.

[CHARACTER SAMPLES]
COMMUNITY POST (FIRST PERSON) SAMPLE:
[Enter Sokka, currently far too close to his comm unit as he examines it as though it might bite him. For all he knows it might.]
Alright, little box, tell me what these are for. [he jingles his dogtags, lifting his eyebrow.] I don't even have a dog to tag.
And-and what's with all this superhero business? Do they mean like the Avatar, because they got the wrong guy. I'm just a warrior, nothing to see here...
[mostly to himself] These buildings are even taller than the ones in Ba Sing Se. Is the air even thick enough to live on top of one? I'm pretty sure I've seen enough now. Can I go home?
Hey, [turning his attention back to his comm] have you seen a girl... about my height, maybe a little shorter. Scratch that, she's definitely shorter than me. With long dark hair in braids? That's my sister, and I seem to have misplaced her. Not that I make a habit of misplacing her, but she has a tendency to run off, and I really don't think we should be separated until I can figure out what's going on here.
You're not going to try to take me back to some creepy lab to experiment on me right? Because that would just be too much. I like all my extremities right where they are, thank you very much. Wait a second, what's this--oh. [comm cuts out unexpectedly]
LOGS POST (THIRD PERSON) SAMPLE:
Sokka sat cross-legged on the floor of his MAC apartment, still wary of the strange and foreign furniture as he painted silently with some art supplies he had found. A loud crack of thunder startled him from his reverie and he looked down at what he had drawn, realizing he couldn't remember. A dark sky and a violent shock of lightning showed across the canvas. That was weird, he thought, wishing he could see the moon even if it wasn't the moon Yue presided over.
Even more than that, he wished Katara were here. Every time he rounded a corner or discovered something new he wanted to tell her; expected her to be there. He would turn to her only to realize she wasn't there, time and time over. It was getting so tiresome, the days stretching long in her absence.
It was almost disturbing to think of all the things he relied on his sister for, having no choice but to learn to make do without her. At least he had Toph here and really, he would've gone crazy a long time ago without her. He had grown closer to her than he ever had been at home, as the both clung to the only familiar face.
He still jumped every time someone flipped on a light switch or started a car, and the poles piping electricity throughout the City seemed beyond dangerous to Sokka. It reminded him a little of the Earth Kingdom, and maybe that's why Toph seemed more relaxed here. It was probably just because she had been here longer; Sokka was just grateful she couldn't see him to make fun of his panicked faces.
FINAL NOTES ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER:
Sokka's boomerang and his meteor sword were both lost in the Final Battle, the two things he cherishes most in life. Therefor, they won't be traveling to the city with him :(
