character name: Roxanne (Of Love and Hate)!
Fandom: Claymore
Timeline: 117!
character's age: Who even knows, Claymores don't age. She's an adult though. She appears to be in her 20s?

powers, skills, pets and equipment:
Roxanne has a bunch of powers from various sources! For the sake of sanity, we'll divide this section down a few lines.

Typical Claymore Abilities: She has all of these, just like any Claymore would. What this means is: superhuman strength, speed and durability/endurance. An odd resistance to pain. The ability to filter her system such that she can only become ill, intoxicated or poisoned if she chooses to permit those things to work, and the ability to choose how well it works. The ability to adjust her body temperature to the environment. Regenerative powers, including the ability to regrow things like eyes and reattach things like limbs. Energy reading and sensing, and a "bank" of yoki - the energy that fuels her powers - which can be drawn on to whatever degree she prefers at any time (though going over 80% risks awakening - losing her human side to the monster within, which would increase her power but also make her an amoral cannibal. Not that she isn't one already. ... yeah.)

During her first life, Roxanne was a Number One ranked warrior - the strongest of her generation - and is known to have been one of the most powerful number ones of all time... so it's fair to say that she has all of these abilities to an unusual/extraordinary degree... although how she got them to that point is a somewhat. Interesting. Question.

In any case, her regenerative powers are especially noteworthy, as she was able to instantly regenerate a missing eye - a feat which most warriors with her offensive power would find difficult.

Typical Claymore Skills: Like all of the organization's warriors, she trained from childhood in the use of all medieval type weapons, with a specialty in swords, and a particular specialty in the two-handed sword called the Claymore, which she can wield one-handed due to her superhuman strength. Claymores were also trained in various social skills and have a working knowledge of various fields to permit them to work undercover if necessary - according to Clare this basically means knowing how to pass as anything from a prostitute to a nun and back again, which makes acting one of their strongest social skills .

Roxanne's special ability: Like many warriors, Roxanne has a special power/technique of her very own. In her case, it involves synchronizing her yoki with target's. This allows her to quickly learn and copy their special abilities and, by so doing, "cheat" her own rate of progression. It is unknown how long it takes to do this, but it can be assumed that she got better at it over time, as early in her career she took a great deal of time observing and copying her targets, whereas it appeared to take only one viewing to copy Cassandra's extremely strong technique. ...assuming she did copy it, see below. This also allows her to render her yoki signature completely invisible to a particular target.

For the purposes of Scorched, and in my attempt to make her a more dangerous potential antagonist, I'd like to extend this ability to other canon's energy-fueled powers - in other words, she could learn reiatsu or chakra based powers, but not just, say, leech Superman's strength, and she could not copy someone's skills. To avoid making her a massive godmode, I would institute the following limitations: 1. Copying non-native abilities would be more difficult and take longer. 2. She could only maintain one to five non-native abilities at a time (depending on their strength - she could hold five powers on the level of, say, encouraging vegetable growth but only one power on the level of, say, someone's bankai) and would need to discard old ones as she acquired new ones and 3. If she were killed, she would lose one to five nonnative abilities (honestly, I'd just roll a random number generator to decide), which could theoretically set her back to her basic skillset.

Randomly, Roxanne is also noted as being ambidextrous, as she changed sword hands from right to left when she became infatuated with Cassandra.

The abilities she's acquired in the past: To the knowledge of, well, me as I'm writing this application, the abilities she is known to have acquired from her teammates include:-The Blades of Evil: A sword technique used by Number 31, Uranus - a technique that, by using the guard, hilt and every other part of the sword to compensate for her relatively low speed. Roxanne is said to have discarded this technique once her ability became strong enough to work without it.

-A yoki-reading based fighting skill used by Number 9, Neideen. This allowed her to fight at a high level despite her lack of depth perception (Neideen lacked one of her eyes) , or even with her eyes closed. Basically this means Roxanne can fight an energy-based foe equally well without vision.

-The 'beautiful swordfighting technique' used by Elizabeth, the number five of her time - while there is little detail given on it, it's obviously described as beautiful and is known to have given Cassandra, the Number One, a difficult time.

-Finally, Cassandra's dust-eater technique, in which the body begins to move like a snake or something like that. With this ability Cassandra became very difficult to hit/counter as she appears to be sliding under people's feet. ... I'm not sure this ability makes much sense but in any case it's responsible for making Cassandra one of the most powerful number ones of all time. The only thing about it is, while implied, it's not entirely clear that Roxanne lifted Cassandra's technique - she's known to be a bit aesthetically-inclined, and dust-eater is unattractive enough that Cassandra preferred not to be seen using it. And unlike her other acquired powers, Roxanne is only known to have seen it in action once - she may have decided she didn't like it, who knows. So I added it for the sake of completion, but wouldn't use it until Roxanne is shown to have it by the manga or, well, maybe if she dies and it's left up to me to decide.
...I realize this all makes her sound like quite the crazy powerhouse... which she is, but despite her multitude of abilities, I don't believe she's quite as powerful as, say, Teresa or Priscilla (as she is in Anatole), and she's nowhere near as strong as an Abyssal or Aizen, so it's mostly just longwinded because I wanted to be thorough.

canon history:
It seems every Claymore history section begins with the words, "little is known about..." and this one is no different.

Little is known about Roxanne's childhood or upbringing. What is known is this: she somehow ended up an orphan, or a slave, and was acquired by the Organization. She spent most of her youth in training, and eventually (probably in her mid to late teens) became certified. We know this because this is the typical story of any warrior. But from there, things get very interesting.

Her original rank was 35 - not terribly impressive or powerful. As such, she would normally be destined to be sent on random assignments dealing with unimpressive normal yoma. But at some point, on a whim, they assigned her to be the weak fifth leg in an expedition against an Awakened Being led by the 5th ranked warrior, Elizabeth. There, she met Uranus, Number 31 - another warrior of little inherent talent or strength. However, unlike Roxanne, Uranus had managed to find a sword technique that allowed her to fight outside her inherent level - an ugly technique many called the blades of evil, which used the hilt and guard of their swords as well as the blade itself to compensate for her lack of inherent speed.

Roxanne became infatuated with this ability, and as a result of this (as well as the proximity of her district to Uranus's), they became close. And they remained close right up until the moment when Roxanne realized that she had surpassed her friend's power. Suddenly, she felt that Uranus's fighting style was hideous and desperate.

Shortly thereafter, Uranus died on an awakened being hunt. Roxanne showed no outward reaction. None at all.

At that time, Roxanne had become Number 24.

Shortly thereafter, Roxanne met the Number Nine of the time, Neideen, on another awakened being hunt. Neideen had lost her eye, and had therefore developed a combat technique that relied on yoki perception, allowing her to fight even with her good eye closed. Roxanne mysteriously lost her eye as well in that battle, and began to mimic Neideen's style. The two became good friends and battle partners - so close that even the Organization recognized their relationship and sent them on hunts together frequently.

Soon, Roxanne found that her ability had drawn close to Neideen's. Shortly thereafter... Neideen died during a routine awakened being hunt. It was considered strange, really - such a powerful warrior dying in combat with such a weak opponent.

The instant Neideen died, Roxanne's eye returned to normal.

Around this time, Roxanne achieved the rank of Number 11. Also around this time, other warriors began to consider Roxanne rather creepy and unnerving. Possibly because all of her friends kept dying.

For some reason, this did not stop Number 5, Elizabeth, from spending time with her. Elizabeth had an excellent and beautiful sword technique which Roxanne quite admired. She began to practice it as well... and soon, Elizabeth, too, became a corpse on the ground.

At the time that Rozanne achieved the rank of Five, the Number One warrior was Cassandra - known to this day as one of the most powerful Number Ones of all time. Her position was unquestioned, and even the Number Two warrior of their generation was far beneath Cassandra's ability.

Roxanne became infatuated as she never had been before. She sought Cassandra out, and heaped praise upon her, befriended her, and even began fighting left-handed to emulate Cassandra. Flattered, and unaccustomed to communications with warriors, most of whom avoided her in awe, Cassandra responded positively to Roxanne's affections, and they became... close. The extent of their relationship is unclear, though it is said they spent long days together, training and sharing a bed. Roxanne became frustrated, however, as Cassandra didn't seem to live up to her reputation. Indeed, the all powerful number one seemed to have a great deal of difficulty dealing with the technique Roxanne had emulated from Elizabeth. And regardless of their relationship, Cassandra refused to allow Roxanne to be present during an awakened being hunt.

...fortunately for Roxanne, she had the unusual ability to make her yoki signature completely invisible to one target.

Using this technique, she hid from Cassandra when the Number One went to fight an awakened being.

It was in this way that Roxanne came to know Cassandra's special technique - an odd, low swinging ability that inspired Roxanne to give her "friend" the title "Dust Eater."

What, exactly, happened after that is unknown. But what is known is that Roxanne was the one to deliver the killing blow to Cassandra, thus sending her former 'friend' into history, and eventually replacing her as Number One.

personality:
Ever seen Single White Female?

It's a lot like that, really.

...what, the personality section needs to be longer? Okay, here we go.

Roxanne appears to be extremely likable: friendly, good natured, full of effusive praise and admiration. She's charming and sweet, and befriends others easily.

Her charisma, while rarely shown on panel directly, can be extrapolated from the ease with which she draws people close to her, despite her reputation for creepiness and the suspicious circumstances surrounding the deaths of everyone she grows close to. Indeed, she even seduces the Number One of her generation (whether physically or emotionally isn't entirely clear).

Her bonds with those she 'targets' are intense and difficult to deny - even the Organization itself, which discourages personal relationships more often than not, recognizes and accepts her bond with Neideen as a genuine partnership and grants them co-assignments whenever possible. This also implies that she excels at teamwork - she can easily fall in with other warriors and complement their abilities and skills, and she delights in doing so as much as she delights in forming the bonds that largely define her history as a warrior to begin with.

...speaking of those bonds, let's take a look at them.

Generally, Roxanne is attracted to people with talents and power that exceed her own - she becomes infatuated - one could even call it a crush. Or maybe a bit of an obsession. In order to draw closer to the object of her affection, Roxanne will change things about her fighting style to mirror theirs - she'll switch her fighting hand from right to left for example. What she is actually doing in this time is synchronizing her yoki to theirs and copying whatever it is they do - the ways they use their power, and drawing those abilities into herself. In a sense, you could almost suggest that she is becoming them, taking their experience and skills and perspective into herself and copying It over. Herein lies the Single White Female comparison.

Of course, we all know how those movies end, right?

So it shouldn't be so surprising to find that as soon as she's taken everything she admired in them into herself, beautiful, sweet, likable Roxanne... becomes the executioner of those she loved so well.

You could say that once she's surpassed them, suddenly they seem small and insignificant to her. Useless. Weak.

How she kills them is unknown - does she hack them to pieces herself? It seems unlikely, in most cases at least, considering that their deaths tend to be in front of witnesses. It's possible that she uses her yoki manipulation ability to cut their power off entirely just long enough for their opponent to bring them down. Well, it's hard to say. All we can definitely claim is that Roxanne seeks out those greater than herself, draws them near to her, becomes intensely involved with them, drains them dry and then kills them off.

...but she's very pleasant about it.

At least on the outside. Inside, Roxanne frequently looks down on others, thinking of them as beneath her. The primary exceptions would be those who are stronger than herself... but as has been mentioned before, this doesn't tend to last. Still, it should be noted that while she does sort of suck the life out of people and then kill them, her reaction to them - her craving to be near them and become like them - does appear to be genuine. Her obsession and affection are, while fleeting, real enough while they last.

There are a few other things to note about her: Roxanne appears to be one of the very few warriors who takes the time to pretty herself up - she's clearly wearing lipstick or lip stain or whatever it is that warriors would use to darken their lips with... and she ultimately tends to discard techniques that seem unattractive to her - although unattractive is relative in her case, as it will tend to depend on whether she finds the technique useful. Still, from this you can reasonably extrapolate that she has a bit of an aesthetic streak.

She is also fond of playing with her prey - when she fights the twins, she hacks their arms off and leaves them severely injured, but does not kill them... opting instead to wait for them to repair themselves so she can cut them to pieces again. She also has a sadistic streak - she seems to enjoy taunting Cassandra from afar with her little smiles and waves, and when she's finally seen Cassandra's technique, she goes out of her way to find an unflattering name to label Cassandra with, knowing her 'friend' would dislike it. In a certain sense, once she's done with someone, she can tend to resemble a cat batting her prey around for a few moments before she moves in for the kill.

During these moments, Cassandra can be noted as being, well, rather creepy.

All in all, it's probably fair to say she's a sociopath and a serial killer. She's also extremely powerful. Fun.

why do you feel this character would be appropriate to the setting?

It is the home of all the great claymores she hasn't eaten alive yet.

NO I'M KIDDING.

Roxanne is from a hostile environment and is very well equipped to handle more hostility.
