Not that I haven't had similar reactions before, but recently re-watching "American Movie" has led me to believe that Mark Borchardt actually possesses some mutant, quantatively-spastic genius.
Not only from his near-superhuman resolve in the face of adversity (most of which he creates himself), but also from his wonderfully entertaining and strangely sage non-sequitur rants: "Is that where you wanna be, man? Drinking Peppermint Schnapps and tryin' ta' call Morocco at three in the mornin'?"
He also has a rather unique and striking visual style as a filmmaker. Say what you will about the narrative content and production value of the short film "Coven"...it actually looks pretty damn good.
Unfortunately I think his own mutant genes and addictions have kept him from exploiting the fame that American Movie brought him. I mean...after that you think he would have DEFINITELY been able to find at least modest funding for his mid-west slice-of-life opus "Northwestern".
I dunno. He has some movie entitled "Scare Me" in the works and he has acted in a slew of things since American Movie. We'll see...
Go Mark Go!
