I'm the type of guy that believes that every personally-monumental line from a movie has meaning in real life. There's this movie called, "Down by Law" and I finally found some meaning to what Ellen Barkin says to Tom Waits, "You've gotta learn to jerk people off a little". And that's just what I did this morning. My boss calls me in and says, "I like you, Chris. I don't want to lose you because of this lay-off". My mind didn't really focus on what he was saying. Rather, I thought about an episode of 20/20 that I saw which showed the tell-tale signs of lies. Using, of course, Bill Clinton's speech referring to him not receiving oral from an intern. I was thinking of this because I had to make him think that I'm staying at this job, and that I'm not looking for another job. So, while I was sitting in my meeting, here's what went through my head:
1. Keep eye contact
2. Refrain from rapid blinking (even while contacts dry out)
3. ONLY wipe sweaty palms on pants if about to shake hands
4. Make light of situation as to throw recipient of lie off the scent
Actually, I did pretty good.
1. I kept eye contact, which is difficult since he's a close talker and infrequent bather.
2. I lost vision in both eyes, but I managed to stop blinking every 1/2 second.
3. Luckily, to save money they didn't turn on the heat today, so no chance of sweaty palms. Pneumonia, on the other hand...
4. My boss says, "I know this is a bad time of year to be losing out on money. I recognize that you've got bills to pay."
So I said, "Yeah, this arm isn't gonna spike itself."
He laughed. Heroin is kinda funny. Aside, from the death & life-ruining 'n all. Anyhow, I got away with my lies upon lies.
"They lied about the function of the eyes. About the walls, and the doors and the mirrors inside.
I was hypnotized by the look in your eyes."
I'm going to document my Christmas during my next update. This is how it goes so far, Christmas sucked. New Year's was awesome. Chronicles of Riddick is ridiculous. Me, in a nutshell...
Hope you're all doing well,
Chris
