Here are lines from the first 20 songs that pop up on my playlist. The challenge: comment with a drabble inspired by any line of your choice! Then go and post these instructions in your own journal so people can write drabbles for you.
03. be afraid of the old, they'll inherit your souls
Brian was 10 when he decided he wouldn't grow old. Age made everyone seem like they were fraying apart at the edges, seams splitting just a little bit more every time their mouths opened; as if their lives had spiraled out of control long ago and they didn't even have front seat tickets to the show.
Logic catches up with him five years later, when he finds himself becoming a fixture in the jarringly bright and blunt Novotny household. Debbie and Vic's version of old is ripe and overbearingly warm. It's head-on and unapologetic and Brian thinks maybe their version of is worse than the one he's used to.
He knows from the photo albums and from the stories Vic tells when Deb's not around that he used to be like Brian. He used to fight the grain, he used to be forceful with nothing but charm. But Brian can tell Vic doesn't want what he used to have, that he's gone soft. He doesn't like the idea that he's been eating dinner with his future self.
He doesn't have time for regret or apologies if he's going to speed through life, and no one realizes how morbid his creed is. He won't - refuses to - cave in from abatement or split at the seams. He gives himself a number and he starts counting in shot glasses and bumps and tongues all the while dancing to the beat of his decision.
