Daughter started 8th grade yesterday here in the town we moved to because of the excellent school system. Yes, this is the same system that failed my son who is now homeschooling. This is the same system I set my sights on getting my kids into (which means being able to afford to live in this town) so they could get a great education in a racially and culturally diverse community. Eyah.
So, the school system took a big hit financially. Both Math and Social Studies classes have over 32 kids in the room with one teacher. Kids who signed up for French are sitting in 2nd year Spanish classes wondering what to do. If this is what's happening in my town, I can't even fathom what it must be like in the cities.
Meanwhile we have a new superintendent who's paycheck is $128,000 annually and who is hiring consultants from his hometown (in Florida) to tell us what's wrong with our schools. I bet if he asked parents who live here, we'd line up around the block to tell him for free. I know I'd take him up on an invitation.
If the class sizes don't come down considerably, I'll be homeschooling 2 kids which sounds kind of fun. I can see us getting in the van and hitting the road and calling it educational.
