A man came into voodoo doughnuts this morning. He's a regular, always kind of shifty, but I've met him before. Rogelio, Roger in English. He orders two crullers: one maple, one chocolate. "Things are changing" he says and casually he tells me his wife is leaving him. My voice gets soft and quiet when I tell him 'I'm sorry'. It kind of hurt a little to hear. I'm just the doughnut girl, maybe he simply needed to tell someone. I always thought of complete strangers as the best people to confess secrets to.
A few weeks ago, so early in the morning that it was still dark out, I walked up to the counter and a lady was crying. Its just this song she says, "Stand by Me" by Oasis was playing. I told her i understood, that sometimes people just feel things that other people can't. I walked to the back and let her cry a little, then I sold her an apple fritter.
