Oh, you know what it is? That is Kantarou's version of events, as read by Haruka in the newspaper when Kantarou's write-up was published, observed and later being told to the Kasha (I think, possibly some other youkai) by Mr. "Hair over the eye"--the painter whose night terrors were straightened out by Kantarou and Haruka in a side-story of...volume 6?
So the exact wording is probably embellishment by Kantarou. You remember the scene where Kantarou throws the newspaper on sleeping Haruka and Haruka says "why did you have to do that!", and tells him to read the article on Karmic Payback. So what we're reading is Kantarou's written version of events (which by Haruka's reaction is probably not always fully truthful or candid.)
Even though Itou is telling the story, the presentation we see seems to be more the actual events? Seems unlikely that Kantarou would write or tell about being flown there by Haruka, or even if that, to include his nightmare about his mother, especially since he's so sensitive about that topic.
It's kind of inconsistent that way, so it's hard to tell.
Speaking of which - if that nightmare was a memory, that's probably the biggest insight to what happened that we've gotten in English so far.
You may be right. I think now that what was in the paper wasn't actually an article by Kantarou about karmic payback, but about the train crashing and having only 1 casualty--the woman with the bracelet--illustrating the principal of karmic payback.
That was a great line! I think Haruka has a lot more of a sense of humor or at least comedic presence in the manga than he does in the anime. More snarky comments rather than just scowling. It's a fun side to him! I like to take it as another sign that he's getting comfortable in his life with Kantarou - which he says himself as well that he's happy with where he is.
Lots of side stories in this volume, the host club one is especially goofy. XD Youko and Watanabe seems like an odd combo? But I like that she sticks up for herself when he's being creepy.
I enjoy most of the Record of One Hundred Goblins stories, even if they're delaying the main plot. Kind of nice to see the more normal everyday type mini-adventures. The wardrobe swap was pretty funny.
The best thing about the school stories is Haruka in glasses. :D Other than that, this one wasn't all that interesting.
Yeah, that line was something I would more have expected from Sugino- he can be very snarky when he wants. Haruka wasn't one for speaking in general until recently- & I think you are right, he is getting more comfortable in his life (I remember early in the series when Kantarou took his hand when he started getting panicky in a crowd-it was subtle but very telling). I still have lots of questions about Edwards- I'm not sure he is human.
Haruka has a good reason to not trust easily, as we see in this volume. I need to reread all the early volumes again too, I don't remember that scene, but it sounds cute.
Oh really? I never thought about Edwards not being human. How come? He definitely has suspicious written all over him though.
We're not going past Vol 9 in this particular thread, right? I don't want to get ahead.
Yeah, I figured we'd start another thread for v 10- so people can discuss as they read. My suspicions about Edwards are mostly based on the ease with which he fought Haruka- (though he also has a definite squick factor for me too).

When I was translating this I only finished the first chapter.
This volume breaks the 4th wall a lot.
