Love in the Ice

Oct 10, 2010 18:49

There was a stifling loud silence in the forest as the boys followed the little stream that gurgled happily, ever so often glancing back, their sweaty hair sticking to their foreheads as they ran, the tall grass covering a good half of their bodies. Brown eyes flicked nervously from side to side, hidden under a brown cap and long black lashes.

“Hyung,” he panted, slowing his footsteps. “Hyung, slow up. Are you sure we're going in the right direction?”

The older boy paused, his black sneakers skidding to a halt on the ground as he waited for the younger one. “Yes. Teukie hyung said before that if anything happened we just had to follow the stream, didn't he?”

“But do Eunhyuk hyung, Junsu hyung, Changmin and Kyuhyun know that?” the younger boy asked. “Only you, me, Donghae hyung and Yesung hyung know, don't we?”

“Ryeowook,” the older said exasperatedly, flicking his black hair out of his eyes. “Eunhyuk and Junsu set up this entire thing in the first place. They of all people should know how to go. Have some faith in them, they'll bring Changmin and Kyuhyun there.”

“Hyu -” Ryeowook's words were cut off by an angry yell from behind. “Oh, shit, hyung let's run.”

“Hnnng as if you had to tell me that,” his hyung said, breaking out into a run. Ryeowook followed suit. Soon the yells were lost far behind them, and the two boys found themselves inside a clearing surrounded by lush trees. The river had ended in a waterfall and there was no way down the cliff besides abseiling, and that was obviously not an option now.

“Hyung, now what?” Ryeowook said, looking around in fear. They were safe for now, but only for so long; the men would be after them any time now.

“Ryeowook,” his hyung said, eyes distant. “Ryeowook, do you think you could jump far enough to reach that patch of grass?”

Ryeowook's eyes looked from his hyung to the patch of grass. It was soft grass, lying next to the river extended from the waterfall, but was quite a distance away from their current position. “I should be able to reach it, but I definitely cannot jump that far.”

“I'll throw you over, then,” his hyung said, mouth setting into a thin line.

Ryeowook looked at his hyung with trepidation, but nodded.

“Good luck, Ryeowook. Lie low if anything happens to me, and just follow the river, okay?” his hyung muttered, before picking the younger boy up easily. “One, two, three, JUMP!”

And Ryeowook was flying, heading towards the grass, hurtling, speeding. Rolling himself into a ball to brace himself, he landed with a thud and a roll on the grass.

Looking back up at the cliff he had just jumped - or flew - off from, he searched for his hyung. There was no sight of his older friend anywhere, and just as panic was building in the pits of his stomach, he heard them - gunshots.

“Hyung!” he yelled. “HYUNG!”

Silence, except for the gurgle of the river.

Running towards the cliff, “HYUNG!”

There was a gruff yell of “Stop!” and suddenly, a defiant but terrified “Never!” that resounded with painful familiarity. The voice seemed to be near the edge of the cliff, and as Ryeowook watched he could hear his hyung moving backwards, nearer and nearer to the side.

“If you don't stop, I'll shoot. Tell me where the place is!”

“What place? What are you talking about?”

“The hideout of the rebels! Answer me, boy!”

“I don't know where it is!”

Bang. Bang.

There was a howl of pain from the cliff, and Ryeowook looked up just in time to see his hyung falling downwards towards him, landing with a searing crack sound.

“Hyung!”, running towards him.

His limp hair matted his sweat-slicked forehead, and there was a large bleeding wound on his hyung's shoulder. “Hyung!”

His hyung opened one coal black eye painfully, wincing as he did so. “Nngh, W-Wook? What are you doing here?”

“You pabo, hyung!” Ryeowook's eyes stung but he blinked them away resolutely. “What were you thinking, hyung?! Are you trying to get yourself killed?!”

“Y-You ungrateful dongsaeng!” his hyung managed to choke out, chuckling slightly, before abruptly stopping and clutching his shoulder.

“And you call me ungrateful! What can I do with you!?” Ryeowook flung his arms up in exasperation.

“Look for T-Teukie hyung. D-Donghae should be there already, tell them what happened, ask them to send Yu-Yunho here, h-he studied medicine before, I think he can do something about t-this. Can you car-r-ry me to that tr-ee? The blood's going to choke me soon.”

Ryeowook bit his lip; it was true, the only way out of this was to go straight for help, however reluctant he was to leave his hyung. “O-okay.”

Lifting his hyung up with newfound strength, he carried the latter to the large tree, before tearing off his shirt to act as a makeshift bandage. “I'll be right back, hyung. Don't sleep, hyung. Don't sleep.”

His hyung nodded, and Ryeowook sped off into the growing dusk, down the dirt path that he had been told led to the hut Leeteuk stayed in, and that other rebels occasionally dropped in on.

Then there it was, standing out in the midst of the green, yet blending in so perfectly, like it had always been part of the earth. Which it was, seeing that it was built of wood and logs and covered by leaves.

Speeding up, his sneakers rustling the pile of leaves that littered the ground, he knocked thrice on the door. “Teukie hyung!” he panted, “Teukie hyung!”

The door opened to reveal a brightly-lit interior. A tall teenager - Jungsu, or Leeteuk as he was known among the boys - stood framed against the doorway. “Oh? Ryeowook? What are you doing here?”

“Hyung, hyung got shot by the Men, he - he's at the cliff, he told me to look for you and Yu-Yunho hyung.”

“What?” there was a sudden movement from the shadows of the room. “Hyung's HURT?”

As his eyes adjusted, Ryeowook saw the familiar silhouettes of Donghae and Junsu slumped in wooden chairs; Kyuhyun was standing up, his eyes bright and flickering with worry. Yunho placed a restraining hand on Kyuhyun, but himself was standing up and already putting on a jacket and torchlight.

“Kyuhyun, no, you will stay here and look after them. No, do not protest, I do not need that now. Teukie hyung, are you ready? Ryeowook, lead the way.”

Ryeowook nodded, shivering suddenly. He had not realised the onset of dusk, and the cold that night brought to the forest had been lost on him in his hurry to reach Leeteuk. Pulling a jacket from the coat-rack, Kyuhyun chucked it towards him.

The three of them headed out, Yunho holding a first aid kit and firing questions at Ryeowook about the extent of his hyung's injuries.

Before long they were nearing the cliff and Ryeowook started calling for his hyung. “Hyung, hyung, hyung answer me!”

The torchlight Yunho was clutching swept over the surroundings, its beam catching an owl perched in a tree, the glint of a field mouse's eyes, and then a white cloth. “THERE!” Ryeowook cried, leading the two elder boys forward.

They reached the tree, and were relieved to find the boy still breathing, although the makeshift bandage had been soaked thoroughly red. Yunho immediately went to work, swiftly disinfecting the wound and bandaging it up while Leeteuk stood beside him, holding the torchlight. Ryeowook was shivering to the bone now, having on him only the thick jacket Kyuhyun had tossed to him before leaving the hut.

“Okay, done. Now let's get him back to the hut, I need to get the bullet out of his body.”

Ryeowook nodded. “Hyung, hyung. Hyung. Wake up, hyung.”

There was no reaction. “Hyung, I told you not to go to sleep.”

Silence.

“Sungmin hyung!” Ryeowook cried, tears pricking his eyes. “Sungmin hyung, don't leave me, wake up, hyung, wake up!”

Leeteuk bent down and picked Sungmin up. “Sungmin-ah, we're going to get you fixed up, don't give up on us, okay? For Wookie and for Kyuhyun, okay?”

Sungmin groaned and opened an eye. “T-Teukie hyung?”

“Yeah, I'm here.”

“Hyung!”

Sungmin smiled into Leeteuk's arms, before quietly slipping out of consciousness again.Love in the Ice - Chapter One (Yunjae, Haehyuksu, Changkyu, Kyuminwook, Yewook)
