“I love you,” Kurt whispers, wincing as Blaine carefully places an ice pack over swollen eye.

Blaine tries to smile, but it comes out sad and scared and Kurt hates it. “I know you do,” he replies. Slowly he reaches up, fixing Kurt’s hair. “I love you too,” he says.

Kurt smiles softly, trying to push away the pain and the hurt, his fingers curling into the bottom of Blaine’s shirt.

Blaine brushes his lips against Kurt’s cheek, and when he pulls away there’s a smile on his face, a real one this time.

“Everything’s going to be okay,” he says, and Kurt believes him.

---

Blaine whishes things are different.

Kurt’s curled into his side again, tucked up underneath his arm as they sit in the nurse’s room. Again.

It’s the third time this week.

“Let me see, please, Mr. Hummel,” the nurse’s voice is soft, low, caring, and Blaine briefly thinks that she’s one of the only people in the school who cares about what’s happening to them.

Kurt winces, turning back into Blaine’s side at Mrs. Johnston gasps, her hand covering her mouth.

It’s bad this time.

There’s a bruise over Kurt’s left cheek and eye, already big and ugly, and they can both still see the angry red marks across Kurt’s throat; Blaine knows that if he looks there will be another bruise across Kurt’s hip.

His fingers twitch on Kurt’s shoulder.

He wishes there was something he could do, something more besides holding Kurt’s hand and sticking up for him.

He knows that if he looks in the mirror, there will be a matching bruise to Kurt’s across his face, but it doesn’t seem enough, not when Kurt’s in pain and hurting. The pain of a fist to his face is nothing like the pain he feels when Kurt takes a hit.

“Oh Kurt,” Mrs. Johnston murmurs, reaching out to touch Kurt’s shoulder; they all ignore the slight flinch Kurt gives at the touch.

---

“Go to prom with me?” Blaine asks, voice low, his words whispered against Kurt’s pale neck.

Kurt’s whole body tenses at his words, but Blaine won’t regret them.

“Blaine,” Kurt whispers, his arms wrapping around Blaine, “yes,” he says.

Blaine smiles, tightening his arms around the taller man; he wants Kurt to be happy again.

---

There’s a bruise that’s still healing across Kurt’s neck, a dull, fading yellow color now, but Blaine still thinks he looks amazing.

Their suits match, some brand that Kurt picked out, so Blaine knows they look good, but he still wasn’t prepared for the sight of Kurt, for Kurt to be so beautiful and perfect and everything he’s ever wanted.

“Blaine,” Kurt breathes out, like he’s some miracle only for him.

Blaine thinks he got that wrong, that Kurt is Blaine’s miracle.

He doesn’t say that out loud; he knows the look Kurt will give him.

“You’re beautiful,” he says instead, his smile echoing the one Kurt gives him.

No matter what happens tonight, Blaine knows he’s going to remember it as perfect.

---

They sit together at the table, watching with amused smiles as their friends dance.

Blaine’s got his arm wrapped around the back of Kurt’s chair and Kurt’s head is resting on Blaine’s shoulder and not even the glares from the jocks can force the smile from either of their faces.

Kurt’s hand is resting on Blaine’s thigh and every once and a while he’ll tap his fingers in beat with the songs.

Blaine nudges his nose against Kurt’s ear, a soft smile on his face, and whispers, “Wanna dance?”

Kurt’s smile is sudden and bright and everything in the world is perfect whenever Kurt gives him that smile.

“Yeah,” he says.

---

Blaine leads them onto the floor, pulling Kurt close beside him.

He can already feel the stares, hear the slight rumbling from the corners, but he doesn’t care.

He pulls Kurt close as the song starts to play, smiling at the way that Kurt fits against his body.

His face hardens as he catches the eye of one of the jocks; the jock looks away.

He knows this isn’t the end, far from it in fact, but for now the teachers will keep a fight from happening, and Kurt’s smiling again, looking like he isn’t ready to just call it quits, and Blaine doesn’t care what else happens, tonight is perfect.
