Frustrations with translations

May 21, 2007 15:38

I don't want to hash out and already hashed-out topic, I don't know if I am, but here we go.
I'm living in Japan right now, and my only source of SDK is Book Off (a wonderful half-off manga /music store where you can read as long as you please!). And I have to say that I enjoy reading the original Japanese much more than I do the English translations. I would say that my Japanese abilities are about intermediate, and I can make basic sense of what I'm reading, but I have to get out my dictionary and crack down if I totally want to understand it. But I am fine with that.

Of what I have read of the Engligh translations, I see that they are really unfaithful, and with the series being tossed around so much, I can't really trust it, and resign myself to slaving over the Japanese (even if it is unbelievably frustrating sometimes). Yarg, maybe I should try doing my own translations...ha...ha?

I realize that probably most here don't understand Japanese very well or not at all, so this comment won't be of much interest to them, but I was just wondering, for those who have seen the original Japanese manga, what is your opinion?
