Dear Diary,
Bon called me a precocious little girl today, and I frankly don’t like that at all. He always says that I look a lot like mom, but my eyes are blue like dad’s. I sometimes wish that I could see dad’s eyes, just to make sure that Bon isn’t lying to me. Mom told me that she saw them once, and they were just like mine. Bon pretty much raised both mom and dad, and likes to associate everything I do with what they used to be like. It’s really grandfather-like and annoying.
Although Bon is annoying and old and big, his stories are sometimes interesting. He tells me all sorts of stories about mom and dad and how they almost killed each other once. Or twice. But apparently they learned to get along - which I think is a lie. They don’t get along at all.
Akari came over too, with that really weird guy who looks like a baby chick. She told me all the embarrassing things about dad, including the big blue spot on his butt. When I asked him if he could show it to me, dad said that Akari was a liar. I don’t think she was lying, though. Dad is scared of her, and for a good reason. She’s so strong that she could probably kill dad. I think Akari is actually a guy.
The baby chick doesn’t talk very much, but today he put me on his shoulders and we ran around the garden for a while. He’s kind of silly, and I like him. I think I’ll marry him when I grow up.
I wanted the baby chick to tell me about Aka-no-Ou and the Red Tower before it got destroyed and Kyo’s Suzaku and the way dad got beaten up by mom before he “began to cheat,” but he keeps getting distracted by my hair. He likes its colour. Sometimes he helps me cook marshmallows because he can make fire. I think I’ll definitely marry him.
I wonder why Yuya and Kyo didn’t visit me today. Kyo killed Aka-no-Ou and protected everybody, way before I was born. He used to be really big and mean, but became nicer because of Yuya. Great uncle used to call Kyo “hope,” Bon said, so Kyo must be really really strong. Bon told me that Kyo is the strongest samurai in the world, and dad wants to be stronger than him. And mom wants to be stronger than dad.
Sometimes Yuya brings me sweets, and Kyo lets me sit on his lap. So I want them to visit me more often. Yuya is such a nice person, but mom doesn’t think so. It’s because dad used to fancy her, Akari said.
Yuya and Kyo fight a lot too. Yuya’s always yelling at Kyo, and Kyo is always touching her. I think Yuya gets angry at him for touching her because she doesn’t want to get cooties. I’ll remember to give her a cootie shot next time I see her. Yuya’s always going on about how stubborn Kyo is and Kyo calls her ugly all the time, but it’s so obvious that Yuya likes Kyo and Kyo likes Yuya.
It’s the same for mom and dad. They are always being ultra violent and fighting and bickering over stupid things, and mom is always yelling at dad, but sometimes they even garden together and stuff. Sometimes they kiss so much that I have to run over to give them ten cootie shots. I have to take good care of them, because they are both just like children, Bon said.
Mom doesn’t like it when I put on a boy’s clothes and when I say that I want to be a samurai. She wants me to wear kimono and grow flowers and serve tea, but she doesn’t want me to become a samurai. But Grandpa Julian made me a pair of swords and made me promise not to use them until I am older. But I sometimes secretly take them out to swing them around pretending that I’m the strongest samurai in the world.
Dad sometimes teaches me how to fight when mom isn’t around and tells me stories about mom. He kind of proposed to her in the middle of a desert while they were on a journey to become stronger. He said that the moon was so big and pretty that he had to kiss her without having had a cootie shot. I had to emphasize to him the importance of cootie shots, but he just laughed and kissed me. I don’t think he took the issue very seriously.
Mom rules the moon, dad said, and can tell the future by the candlelight. I tried to see the future, and I had a candle and everything, but all I could see was how pretty and happy and sleepy mom looked, leaning against dad. Dad didn’t believe in foretelling anyway, so he told me to be more useful with my eyes and describe to him what everything looked like at the moment. I told him about the moon and the clouds and the orchids and the pretty kimono mom was wearing. He likes it when I describe things like that to him. I don’t think he wants to know anything about the future - he’s always too busy with what’s going on now.
Mom always yells at dad and tries to kill him, but I can tell that she likes dad. I think mom and dad and Bon and Akari and Kyo and Yuya and Yun-Yun and Grandpa Julian and the baby chick and everybody is happy and they all like each other, although they all want to kill each other too. I guess after trying to kill each other for so long, everybody gets tired of the idea.
When I asked Bon why everybody was laughing today, he said that everyone is happy because I am here. He said that I am everyone’s new “hope.” I didn’t really understand, and when I asked him what that meant, he just gave me a piggyback ride. He says stuff that doesn’t make any sense. And he keeps calling me precocious. He’s so annoying. No wonder dad freezes him all the time.
