When driving to see you
I would think of all the things
I wanted to show you
I told myself I would teach
You everything I know
Show you the mysteries I've figured
I tried
When I would see you
You would smile and tell me
About your simple joys
No different than any other young man
The beauty of your smile
Made me forget those lessons and mysteries
Though I tried
But you are no ordinary young man
You will write the books
Lesser men will read
You will build the roads
Lesser men will travel
You will say the things
That men like me will repeat
I tried
I tried but I was not there to teach you
You were there to teach me
You began so young and so raw
And the world will shit on you
And the world will fuck with you
And I'd kill it all just to save your pain
But you'll find strength in it and help me through
As I try
So let the memories grow in grandeur
Let the nostalgia wisp away reality
I hope one day I'll look back and see
That you were there for me
And although I failed at every turn
Let your books show that
I tried
I wanted to affect your worldview
I wanted to define your thoughts of you
But when it came to shove you were so far beyond
So please leave me behind
And please forget my kind
And forgive me but I know the angel's ruin
And I will swallow that knowledge whole so you may run
I'm sorry
