We shall go on to the end. We shall fight. As we fight, we must make the pledge that we shall march ahead. We cannot turn back. There are those who are asking "When will you be satisfied?" We can never be satisfied. For our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. And even though the world is different, the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globe-the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state. But from the hand of God Himself. We cannot surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, we perish, it is for those living, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which we, who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for them to be dedicated to the great task remaining -- that from the honored dead they take increased devotion to that cause for which we gave the last full measure of devotion -- they must resolve that the dead shall not have died in vain. To ensure this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together. We shall "undo the heavy burdens ... and to let the oppressed go free." And that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth. And in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, might step forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old. All this will not be finished in the first 100 days. Nor will it be finished in the first 1,000 days, nor in the life of this Administration, nor even perhaps in our lifetime on this planet. But let us begin. Now the trumpet summons us again-not as a call to bear arms, though arms we need; not as a call to battle, though embattled we are-but a call to bear the burden of a long twilight struggle, year in and year out, "rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation"-a struggle against the common enemies of man: tyranny, poverty, disease, and war itself. Only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth, God's work, must truly be our own. For only then will we be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"
