i always found it interesting to watch how people cracked around me, psychologically. they just broke down and being in those conditions really exposes peoples flaws to this whole process.
you're not missing anything without the night visits.. I spent my entire two months being the only person in camp not to break and engage in dionysian excess, and am quite happy with the decision. even when I was sloshed, at 2am just exiting a bar with prospective candidates signing along to whatever eminem song just came out did I not fall into the trap.
find out who the fuck your Shop Steward is on site and figure out how much you should be paying in dues, and why they say they can't pay you a per-tree rate, and get a copy of the Collective Agreement. The difficult part will be enforcing it as you have to document any infractions and your hippie / college athlete colleugues are too busy drinking and fucking to ignore the pain to really do anything even lusid.
basically how it works is this - the company bids on a huge contract, lets say several hectares of land needing reforestation, and give a bulk price for the whole thing. Then the company breaks down the contract into individual pieces, and decides on the per-tree rate based on the difficulty of the terrain relative to the reamining terrain in the contract.
When they say they can't pay you per tree they are lying and fucking you over becuase, as I have mentioned above, clearly the method by which they negotiate the contract means this isn't the problem.
