Ubuntu in my shoe - Day 1

Jul 08, 2008 21:37

So the time finally comes when I can no longer put off my transition to Linux. It must be done. We'll be switching most of our servers at work in the next 12 months. I need familiarity in order to be efficient. Total immersion time, and what better place than at home! :->

Decided on Ubuntu 8.04 for the first "wetting of the feet". Took our main computer in to work so I could tinker on my lunch hours (only way to get a guaranteed hour each day) and got most of our "required" functions up and running. With that task completed, I brought the box home. This is the first potential "gotcha": From past experience with Linux I know how tricky wireless adapters can be and mine is pretty old. Broke out the man pages, fired up the laptop (windoze), and Googled the adapter. Two hours later and here I am quite happily posting!

Tomorrow I'll give Tracy a walkthrough on the differences. Shouldn't be too difficult as Hardy Heron is so intuitive. That may actually be a bad thing for me: Most of my server work will be command line - very little need for that in Ubuntu!

Best part of the evening: #3 son desperately trying to get to the keyboard so he can slobber on it. Gotta learn 'em young...
