i dont' know why i bother sending emails to students with basic instructions on how to do things, like enrol online.
they clearly don't read or pay any attention to anything i have to say.
if i just let them blunder through on their own, i'd be unaware of their problems and therefore wouldn't get pissed off with them or stressed about it.
i returned to work this morning to discover a barage of emails in my inbox, from frantic students having problems with enrolling online for next year. 2 days ago i sent them a very brief BUT VERY CLEAR list of instructions on how to solve any problems they might have with enrolling. the list of instructions was so simple that a primary school student could have understood it. the instructions also included answers to the most common problems experienced by students when enrolling.
i also included a copy of the guide to enrolment as an attachment, and added a link to the FAQ site, where almost every single problem you can encounter, is dealt with and has trouble shooting instructions, all VERY BASIC and VERY CLEAR.
so far today, i have responded to over 20 emails from frantic students. more than half of those responses went something like this:
Hi [insert name of student here]
Thanks for your email.
Please read my original email carefully. Your question is answered within that email.
Regards
Lou Lou
i'm so tempted to add "i'm surprised that you've managed to survive until 2nd/3rd/4th year given that you obviously can't read or follow simple instructions!!! in future, please take it upon yourself to show a little initiative, common sense and demonstrate your ability to read before you send me a stupid email like this."
