It's close enough to our vacation that my normal OC nature is taking over. Everything that I personally have control over is ready. The stuff that my sweetheart is in charge of, I hope that's ready. The only thing I'm worrying over is the car rental. That had to be all him, and the rental agency, which is not in the same country as the car we'll be renting, wants some of the weirdest stuff. In this day and age, how many people actually have paper bills delivered? We don't. When ebills came into being, I embraced those with a loud Whee! The rental agency wants a paper power bill...in his name. Who pays all the bills, has paid all the bills for well over thirty years? Yes, that would be me. I'm a bean-counter at heart; the WBH is the guy who is all about buckling down and working like a maniac on a short project. So, bills, my name, yeah. They also want the billing address to be the same as the physical address. At that point, I may have head-desked. Why? Because the USPS will not deliver mail down a dirt road, so all of our mail goes to a PO box. I think I'll sneak the last property tax bill into the way too fat stack of paper that's going onto the plane. At this point, I'm betting on too much information vs. the weird stuff they asked for. At worst, it's going to cost more money; at best, it's just the usual car rental irritation.
In preparation for this trip, I splurged and bought noise-cancelling headphones. The dull roar of plane engines always gives me a headache. Sleep? Well, that rarely happens, but maybe, without that constant roar, maybe I could grab a nap. That would be amazing. So amazing that I made my guy try out the headphones. A smile spread over his face. He listened to a bit of music on his phone. The smile grew. I ordered a pair for him. Spread the joy.
As an early birthday present for me, I bought a new tablet. My old Samsung still works, but it was built for a slower era. It would be ok for reading downloaded books, but for email and all those Internet things, it's really really slow. The new Samsung is blazing fast compared to the old one. I've begun loading it with apps and camera manuals. I need to hunt through Amazon and Google Play to see if there's such a thing as a bird book for France that would work on the tablet. Rick Steve's French Phrase book is already on my phone. I gave up the very frustrating job of relearning French a few weeks (months) ago, when my guy made a crack about my terrible accent. Go forth and be the official speaker to the natives! I've got a decent vocabulary. I can even work my way through most of the verb changes. My accent really does suck. So, I'm leaving conversation to the guy who likes to talk to people.
The current homework is to load the tablet with "beach" books. If you've any recs for light reading in the mystery/fantasy/history genres, please share. If I can get it off of Amazon Prime or via my library, I'm there. We've got two eleven-hour flights (to and from), and assuming I can't sleep as usual, might as well read. Who knows what Aer Lingus offers for movie fare?
