And the day started so well. Nice weather, not too hot, no rain in the horizon, figured I'd do my last-minute CNY shopping. I had this tugging feeling to put on long cargo pants but ignored it, and boy did I pay for that.
Here I was, walking along to a local mall when I sunk and fell.
Drains here are usually covered with concrete slabs but very often they're ill-fitting. Today, I fell prey to that as one buckled under me and my hands high-fived the pavement. First it seems like nothing's wrong until I realise I'm bleeding like leaky water balloon from a HOLE in my left shin. Had I worn long cargoes, I'd probably just get scratched badly at worst.
Survival mode kicked in, took off one sock and wrapped my puncture in a makeshift tourniquet to try stem the flow.
Wriggled toes, moved foot around. Okay, no nerve damage.
Bumped my heel on the ground. Okay, no shooting pain, no major fractures.
My poor leggies (WARNING, BLOOD & GORE):
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y136/lgliang/stuff/strawberry-jam.jpg Hobbled around looking for help. Funnily, fellow chinese were less inclined to aid me, had more help from the indian and indon guards watching over the nearby college's carpark. Detoured all over the place until my mum came to pick me up and take me to a clinic near her work place. Had my wounds cleaned out and my puncture stitched up. It was a rather interesting experience to have the hole probed, even under anaesthesia, as I was afraid stuff might be stuck in there and I may go septic.
Dermally abraded knees worry me less, I have enough of those as a kid to not worry about it. Nothing a good wash, talcum dusting and patience can't fix.
Here I am now, at home, with doctor's orders to rest for the weekend until the puncture scabs up. Change dressing on Monday, remove sutures next Friday. Spoiled one knee-long cargo, one sock, my left shoe and lost RM100 to medical bills. Gonna be walking funny for a week.
And all I wanted was a new pair of shoes and a shirt...
