I figured out why the pronunciation of a specific American City sometimes bugs me so much. Either people pronounce it like New ORleans or New OrLEANS. The pronunciation where the first syllable is highlighted (ORleans) is derived from the original French pronunciation. But here comes the crux. Correctly it would be pronunced like /Orleon/. With the highlight on the first syllable. But: Due to the anglicised pronunciation of the vowel /ea/ this semi correct French pronunciation + semi correct English pronunciation is wholly incorrect. Either you use the properly anglicised form OrLEANS with the stress on the second syllable (how it is custom in the English language) or you use the proper French one. /Orleon/. The one where the first syllable is stressed and then it sounds like an English word is simply complete bogus and makes my toe nails curl because it sounds so wrong.
