The words of an angry God

Jun 27, 2011 18:22

I'm sure many people heard about the legalization of gay marriage in New York and will consequently be celebrating with suitably morose predictions of our doom. It looks like Pat Robertson and archbishop Dolan have already started this party (evil! downfall of Western civilization! etc. etc.), and invoked the two classic examples - Sodom and Gomorrah. One problem with this; scripture is far from clear on what exactly the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah were, and it was not until the St. Augustine of Hippo that they gheys were blamed. The problem with this is it relies on a few passages in the Bible (primarily Genesis 19, Jude 1:7) While ignoring many others.

So... about those others? Here are a few:

Ezekiel 16:48-50: "'Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen.

Deuteronomy 29: All the nations will ask: "Why has the LORD done this to this land? Why this fierce, burning anger?" And the answer will be: "It is because this people abandoned the covenant of the LORD, the God of their fathers, the covenant he made with them when he brought them out of Egypt. They went off and worshiped other gods and bowed down to them, gods they did not know, gods he had not given them.

Jeremiah 23:14:...among the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen something horrible: They commit adultery and live a lie. They strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that no one turns from his wickedness. They are all like Sodom to me; the people of Jerusalem are like Gomorrah.

So let's keep this simple, eh? We can start blaming the gays for the collapse of civilization when we are no longer a contributing factor ourselves.
