You make the Faction Paradox novels sound quite appealing, but I just can't stand books where the main protagonist is annoyingly stupid. Would you recommend any of the others to start with?
On the subject of the annoyingly stupid Gillian Petra. She isn't consistently dumb, sometimes she is very bright, so I suspect part of the problem is a desire to a) prevent her over-shadowing Sherlock Holmes and b) to emphasize the difficulties that would be faced by even a well-prepared modern woman in adapting to life in the 19th century. Unfortunately the net affect is that, at least twice, Sherlock Holmes is required to don his knight in shining armour apparel and rush to the rescue which I think could have been avoided without diluting his character or intelligence.
