Howdy from New England!
We left New York this morning. Yesterday was such a wonderful day - 2 musicals in one day, yaay! I lined up for three hours to get tickets to the matinee performance of Wicked, which was just... amazing. Everything was spectacular. And waiting in line wasn't so bad either, it was actually a really enjoyable way to spend the morning! I made friends with a few people in line, mostly tourists from around the US, including a lovely guy called Jason who'd seen almost every musical on Broadway at the moment; he'd even already seen Wicked with the original cast, but wanted to see it again. Because I had been there so early I got one of the first cancellations and had about an hour to kill before the performance, so I had another walk around Times Square - and it was so invigorating to be wandering around New York in the sun, by myself. Even in the most touristy of places, it was nice to feel a bit independent and streetwise. And then that night I saw Avenue Q with my mum and sister. It was really wonderful and so, so funny.... I already knew all of the songs and was looking forward to it a lot, so it was just amazing to see it, and the theatre is quite small so you get up really close even with the cheapest tickets! Oh it was so good. And the cast were amazing.
I forgot to say before that we went to the Museum of Modern Art on Friday night (it's free then) - so cool! To see so many of the paintings I'd studied in year twelve, and not only the ones they always have there but there was a Dada exhibition too, was incredible.
There's also a Starbucks on basically every corner in New York and I've been spending a lot of money there - my little addiction. I'm trying to work out the perfect iced drink. So far I've had an iced no-whip latte (too bitter because I never add sugar to my coffee), two iced no-whip mochas (not bad, maybe a bit too sweet) and an iced no-whip one-pump mocha (still a bit too bitter). I'm thinking an iced no-whip two-pump mocha will be the one.
So today we caught the train out to New Haven, picked up a hire car and drove to Warwick, a little town just outside Providence, Rhode Island. There's GPS in the car and it's still such a novelty. We had dinner at a place called "Legal Sea Food". It's actually not as dodgy as it sounds; it's a chain of restaurants from Boston, famous for its clam chowder. I had gnocchi with lobster, chorizo, spinach and tomatoes..... oh my God. Maybe I'm just used to living off bagels for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but it was so, so good.
I'll keep you posted where and when we have internet... and I'm home on the 12th.
Much love to you all! xox
