Kielbasa help needed!

Jul 22, 2010 14:34

A couple of weeks ago my husband picked up a package of Kielbasa in a "buy this & get all these things for free!" sale at the grocery store. I've eaten Kielbasa, but have never prepared it. I am totally lost on how to use this sausage!

So, I have Kielbasa that I want/need to use.. Ideas on how to use it, please?

Thanks LJ friends!

Some kielbasa is precooked, some not, so just check the label. If precooked, then al lyou need do is heat it up. If not cooked, then cut it up into 3 or 4 inch long chunks, and bring a pot of water to the boil. Drop in the sausage, bring back to boil and turn down to medium, and let it simmer for half covered for maybe 30 min. Either way, make sure the sausage is thawed, not working straight from the freezer. Too hard to cut, for one thing.

Another good way to use it is to cut it into 1/2" coins, and melt a tsp of butter in skillet. Throw in the slices, and cook on Med/Low as it slowly browns and cooks thru. Juices will be collecting int he pan. Fish out the meat with a slotted spoon onto a plate, and throw in 1/2 of a medium onion, chopped up, and 1 tsp minced garlic. Cook and stir until glazed, let sautee. When transparent, add back in the meat, and add boiled, drained potatoes that you peeled, and had cut into egg-sized hunks. Put the potatoes in the skillet too, and let them lightly brown while turning them occasionally. When they are brown enuf to your liking, serve.

Another is to use sliced 'coins' of sausage when making a boxed rice mix, like rice a roni or zatarans. Saute the meat, getting it a little browned, and then add the rice to the dirppings and saute for a minute or so. Add liquids, cover and cook all together. Kind of like a jambalaya.

You can also cut the kielbasa into 4 or 5 inch chunks, and put a slit down the length, halfway thru. Wrap in foil, and put on the BBQ or outdoor grill to heat thru. wonderful on buns with toppings. Great picnic treat.

you can take a ring of it, cut it up into 'coins', and put away into zip bags in the freezer. Take one out when you want to make quiche, scrambled eggs, any dish you want that smokey flavoring in. Fry it up, and proceed with your recipe.

Enjoy!
