meditations on the academy awards

- the guy who won best original screenplay for "little miss sunshine" described a childhood road trip with his family as the one of the "funnest" times of his life during his acceptance speech. i realize it would be a bit unfair at that point to take back the award and give it to someone else but such an egregious abuse of basic principles of grammer would seem to warrant it, in my opinion.

- i have long had raging girl crushes on kate winslet and cate blanchett, both of whom provided plenty of sartorial vindication for my adoration last night. also, diane keaton is the most freaking gorgeous woman of a certain age imaginable. suddenly turning 30 doesn't seem the least bit daunting.

- it was truly wonderful to see martin scorsese finally reach the pinnacle of his profession and follow it up with a best picture win, and even more appropriate that the best director award should be presented by his old friends and fellow indulgers in '70s-era excess spielberg, coppola and lucas. still, i have to wonder how his wife and lovely daughters can let him out of the house sporting those eyebrows. two furry caterpillars shoved into a light socket came to mind; they were looking more in need of grooming than ever before last night.

- i thoroughly enjoyed picturing the reaction of certain corners of white america to the surplus of spanish-speaking presenters, nominees and winners. to say nothing of the japanese, chinese, french and german (ennio morricone gave his acceptance speech in italian! horrors!). not to mention ellen hosting and melissa etheridge winning and thanking her wife. it's also great to realize that the surplus of black nominees (and the two winners) doesn't feel the least bit revolutionary this year.

- george, george, george... leo wasn't looking half bad either. and i'm afraid i still don't see where those who think daniel craig isn't handsome enough to play bond are coming from; he looked good enough to eat last night.

- since i have not had cable for about a year and a half and have watched television sporadically at best for the past three years i was equal parts surprised and appalled by many of the commercials i saw yesterday. the pogues are in a cadillac commercial. j.c. penny is using the zombies and a theme from "butch cassidy and the sundance kid." badly drawn boy is shilling for hummer?!?!? the worst was the pogues though; i realize they probably made more money with that one ad than they had selling albums in the states during their entire career but geez... j.c. penny actually had several fantastic songs in their ads, not that i'm any more likely to set foot in their stores.
