[Russell tilts his head to the side and staaaaares back. He's seen lots of animals in Mayfield, but none this big or disturbingly immobile.]

[It is rather unsettling, isn't it? The buffalo remains right where it is, looking Russell right in the eyes determinedly.]

[cawcawroar]

[aaaah that stare. Still, an explorer is a friend to all, so Russell takes a tentative step forward and holds out his hand for the buffalo to sniff.]

[When he does that, the buffalo sticks its snout into Russell's open hand. Its nose is very wet and cold, but it's not trying to bite him or anything.]

[cawcawroar]

[Russell jumps a little at the coldness of its nose, then relaxes and smiles. With his free hand, he begins to pet the buffalo.]

I've never seen an animal like you up close before. You're a wildebeest, right?

[He pauses, waiting for it to respond. After all, he's met a lot of talking animals in the past few weeks.]

[The buffalo doesn't respond, of course, but it swishes its tail and begins nudging Russell's pockets.]
