[her calm tone doesn't set him on edge so much as the words she speaks, and he finds himself answering in more of a clipped tone than he had intended; he'd originally figured the best course of action would be to set this Christmas rubbish aside and forget about it.]
In person, I assume. Shall I pay you a visit, then?
[well the passiveness certainly didn't last long. he's back to looking miffed, even if it's mainly to cover the guilt her words bring.]
You were more than capable of taking care of yourself. Besides, there's nothing I could have done for you. We aren't easy to kill like the low-level ones, you know. [yes his idea of helping would have been to put her out of her misery he has the best intentions at heart okay]
[o-oh Charles... at least you made an attempt at self-control!! that's all that matters, right.] ...Maybe you... [should have, she can't get herself to say. but it would have been better that way, right? she wouldn't have even cared. she'd have thanked him, really.]
[it is and he'd totally want to be recognised for it if there weren't bigger things to worry about right now. he thinks he knows what she was aiming to finish that sentence with and looks even more unhappy over it, though he'll give her the benefit of the doubt.]
[she presses her fingertips together.] You should have killed me. [it's not self-pitying, sorrowful, or angsty-sounding in the slightest: it's factual and pragmatic, like she's already decided that that would have been the most preferable option and that she regrets that it hadn't happened.]
[so he had been right. there's sharp pang of something he can't quite identify and he shoves it aside almost as fast as it shows itself. there's already enough to deal with.]
As I said, you seemed to be closer to myself than to a D-67 chiropteran. Depending on how close, I wouldn't have been able to kill you even if I tried.
I don't care. [her eyes narrow, hard- she doesn't seem to have picked up on his subtle, momentary change of mood.] You should have torn my head off. You should have lit it on fire. Whatever you had to do.
[her expression is met with a rather cold one, though there's an air of anger about it and a subtle hurt beyond that.] Yes, I'll be sure to keep that in mind. I do enjoy a good decapitation and bonfire, after all.
[it's safe to assume she killed more than one non-drone, he's sure, and he knows it's hypocritical to basically say it's okay for them to die for a day and not her, but for all his talk of putting her out of her misery, he's not sure he could have lifted a finger to do so. her life is worth an innumerable amount of the other citizens, monster or not.]
[though she'd normally pick up on it, what he's thinking and implying now- both don't even cross her mind.] I... killed him- [she grits her teeth together; she does not know yet that the Doctor did not die from her attack.] And my brother. I nearly crushed his throat. What am I supposed to say to him now? [softer, a hiss:] It wouldn't be the first time in the back.
[suddenly, she seems to remember something, and looks at Charles in a manner that is bizarrely unsettled, disturbed.]
...Diva. I was so close. Her blood was... [at this point, she stops. Maybe she's just said it to force Charles to react. She looks at him closely.]
[he'd already opened his mouth to reply to the first statement since nothing could really change his opinion there - the dead would come back to life, and if she was suffering over her actions, he'd do his best to ease it. all for her, with little regard to who she might have harmed.
when she mentions Diva, however, the chevalier in him reacts first. it's a feeling that only manifests itself in a momentary quirk of the lips, a furrowed brow, but it's a look filled with an unrefined, raw and instinctual fury. if he were a lower, instinct-driven chiropteran, perhaps he would have acted on it, but this just becomes another instance where he's grateful to have a functioning mind.]
Sweet? Not to your liking? If you were only so close, did you sample it at all? [a step forward; just a small one to close some of the short distance between them.]
[she takes a small step back. it's not out of fear, though; it's an invitation. she knows that there's only a wall behind her. come forward again.] ...Sweet. But you don't have to worry, Charles. I wouldn't hurt you like that. I promised her that I wouldn't kill her. For your sake. [her tone is almost mocking; in a way, she wishes she'd killed Diva, but she knows that she would never have been able to work up the nerve. not when she matters to much to Charles. as much as she may hate Diva by default, she knows that much: there are some lines which just can't be crossed. bonds which can't be broken. as much as her brother has scarred and damaged her, she wouldn't hesitate to threaten the life of anyone who harmed him. that's just how some things are...
there's a pause, and she meets his eyes.] But I never promised not to hurt her. Still, though... Saya is strangely dedicated to that girl. Maybe it was something else...

[and true to his word, about ten minutes later there will be a sharp knock on her front door.]
