Personality: Meiling is a cheerful and happy youkai who is proud of her heritage (if she really is chinese that is) and her job as gatekeeper of the Scarlet Devil Mansion. She has become a strong youkai over the years with intense training. Despite this she acts very similarly to a human and gets along well with them. She's an open book and will gladly tell you how great her day is going or complain about her difficult job without you asking about it. She also wears her emotions on her sleeve; if she's sad or mad you'll be able to tell right away. Meiling's also a bit ditzy and tends to not always know what's going on all the time. It's not that she's stupid; she just doesn't always pay attention. This can get her into quite a bit of trouble.
Meiling is rather easy going and often chats with humans while on the job. She also won't attack anyone unless you try to get past her, if you approach her you'll simply get a chatty young woman. Slightly lazy, she loves her afternoon naps that she takes regardless of what she's supposed to be doing. This includes her job as gatekeeper and gardener. This makes her a poor worker who is often scolded for her poor work ethic by her Mistress. Regardless of this she says she enjoys her job and would never take up a different job. It's her pride and joy to be a guard and even if she's not great at it she will always be doing it.
She is determined and fiercely loyal to her master, Remilia, and would do anything for her. Of course she's not always good at what her mistress asks for but Meiling always tries to please her. Her relationship with her mistress is much friendlier than formal but Remilia does her fair share of scolding her. Meiling also considers the other residents of the Scarlet Devil Mansion to be her family and would do anything for them as well.
Strengths: Physical: Meiling is known for her strength. She's a master of chinese martial arts and is a youkai who is well rounded in her skills. This means she has no visible weak points. She has spent many years training and is dedicated to staying in shape. Meiling can also use spell cards and danmaku.
Mental: Meiling has the ability to adapt well to new situations during battle. She also has perfect control of her Qi. Meiling is also rather sane and does not have any mental trauma.
Emotional: Meiling is a very determined woman and will do anything she can think of to complete a job given to her. Meiling is also very trustworthy and she won't break a promise no matter what. She's also quite pleasant to be around because she is so human like. Therefore Meiling is easy to relate to.
Weaknesses: Physical: Meiling is a rather weak in terms of being a Youkai despite all of her training. While Meiling has no weak points, she also has no strong ones, so she is still easy to beat in a fight with the right strategy.
Mental: She also isn't a great gatekeeper since people do tend to get past her on certain occasions. She is also lazy, loves her naps, and will take them regardless of what other obligations she may have. Meiling also spends a lot of time practicing her martial arts when she could be doing other things such as doing her job properly.
Emotional: Meiling is clueless about what goes on around her; she can also be tricked easily. Due to this she sometimes ends up being portrayed as a joke character. In canon many characters made her think they were 'evil versions' of themselves, however this was a lie. Meiling still fell for it though. Her honor can also serve as a downfall; she can underestimate her opponents and also accept all battles regardless of her chances of winning.

First Person: Hey there, the name's Hong Meiling! So does anyone have any idea where I am? I think I got really lost... If I don't get back soon the Mistress will be upset with me, haha~ But I've never seen this part of Gensokyo; it's actually really pretty! I'd ask what you guys do for fun around here but I've really got to be getting back. So if anyone's got directions to the Scarlet Devil Mansion that'd be awesome. You'd be saving me a lot of scolding!
And don't tell me something dumb like I'm not in Gensokyo anymore! I couldn't have wandered that far from the gate. That's completely impossible.
Third Person:
It did not matter to the chinese dress clad girl where she was, Meiling had a job to do. And that job was gate guarding. It didn't matter what kind of gate it was; any kind would do at this point. She wandered around the village for any kind of gate to guard and soon she found one. Although it wasn't nearly as magnificent as the gate of the scarlet devil mansion was. It was made of wood and vine and appeared to be the gate to someone's house. Meiling was sure that Remilia would be horrified to see such a poorly constructed gate. But on the other hand the gatekeeper really did miss her job... Meiling wasn't quite sure who's house it was but she decided all on her own that they wouldn't mind hiring a gatekeeper.
Luckily after a few hours Meiling got bored of guarding her newly found gate. Once she remembered that she had no obligation to guard it since it was not the home of her Mistress she decided that for a good few hours of work she deserved a nap. Wandering into this strangers backyard she found a nice tree to lay under and take a well deserved nap. After all since Meiling had guarded the gate for free she decided that a nap in their backyard was sufficient payment. This means she was quite surprised when she was chased out of the yard after she had settled down and shut her eyes. While she fled from the scene of the crime Meiling pondered why people in Luceti were so unappreciative of hard work.
After she had successfully escaped the wrath of the old lady with the broom she went through her normal routene. Next on her list of things to do? Training. Meiling found an open field and practiced her punches and kicks. After all she had to stay in shape! No matter where she was she would always be the same Chinese girl.
