I'm watching Glee as I write this. We were this close to making it through an episode without Gwyneth Paltrow singing, but no such luck - she got the sweeping camera shots as well. *sigh* She doesn't have a horrible voice - I mean, she hits all the right notes but her voice just isn't pleasant to listen to. It's just bland, imo.
Day Twenty-One: One of your favourite shows.
This is a hard one - there are heaps of shows I love, shows that I never get tired of re-watching - I think I probably make it through Veronica Mars once a year, just re-discovered The Pretender (with it's stupid unresolved ending, dammit!) and of course Doctor Who has become a fave. I could probably do this entry a dozen times (and maybe I will - I'm itching to re-watch the Hornblower series) but there is probably one show that I probably love more than any other.
Stargate SG-1
It's not the best sci-fi series in terms of quality - in fact there are so many episodes that are complete rubbish, especially in the later seasons. And they weren’t above copying and pasting from any random Wikipedia page on ancient religions/cultures, and I have serious issues with the whole Sam/Jack thing that went on. I really liked Sam, but I think her character was seriously short-changed being the token girl and therefore the requisite love interest. I don’t have anything against the ship, really - I just never really got it, I guess.
My main love for the show is right here:
Because who doesn't love an archaeologist? I've always tended to be more interested in characters like Daniel - which is why I will always be a Luke Skywalker girl rather than a Han Solo girl. But right from the movie, I loved Daniel, because while he was the standard 'geek' comic-relief, Stargate was really his story, and he was awesome. And then the series came along and there was so much more Daniel awesomeness. But looking back over the entire series, I think one of the best things was Daniel's character arc. Michael Shanks went from doing a near-perfect James Spader impression (when I was young and a moron, I swore up and down that the Daniel of the series was the same actor as in the movie)...
...to evolving the Daniel character in a way that way believable for someone in that situation, over the course of ten years. I can't think of any other show/character that changed so much, and yet stayed true to the core of the character. And it wasnt just cutting the hair, or bulking up (although from a shallow perspectvie, that was very nice)
It was being able to follow Daniel's journey, from a kooky loner to someone who was loved and needed by many, through the grief of losing his wife (and oh, yes, I have written some bad Daniel/Sha're fic), to a growing isolation and eventual choice to Ascension, dying and being resurrected more times then you can count - I just love following that arc. And also his realtionships with all the characters on the show - his friendship with Jack is a given, but I actually think his friendship with Teal'c had more subtlety and depth, and Daniel and Sam are brilliant together as well with the scientific/cultural clash. I think when Ben Browder joined the cast it was actually a breath of fresh air - I like the different relationship he had with Daniel as well, and the meta jokes about their visual similarities and Mitchell being the ultimate fanboy. And when Mitchell came into it Sam got to be awesome again.
And of course, I can't forget Vala - it's a relationship that I think never could have been done earlier in the series run, but towards the end, the Daniel/Vala dynamic just worked.
Daniel's monologue in Unending gets me every time. I rarely have two ships in one fandom for one character - but for Daniel I make an exception.
And the show still makes me laugh. It had its faults, but will always have a special place in my heart. And it has an awesome theme tune.
