Khlongs, suits and steaming heat

Haven't been able to post much this trip. Trying to send postcards at the last minute as the time slips away. We will have a very long ( about 36 hours) Dec 31st flying back across the datelines. We're in Bangkok now, staying near a Buddhist temple in the city with a whole mess of roosters across the street who crow at all hours of the night.

John is going to get his last fitting today for a new suit. Yesterday we explored the canals in a longtail boat. and then went to the incredible Grand Palace, which is a tourist attraction but breathtaking as well. I rank it as even better than the Taj Mahal with a lot less hassle.

Last night we discovered that Bangkok closes down about 10 pm, that there are no drag shows after night and that the gogo bars are actually concentrated in a very small area as compared to the Reeperbahn in Hamburg.. my other red light district for comparison. We entertained the locals by strolling the strip. It is very safe ther4e.

The place where we are living is full of backpackers and Europeans. There is tons of good street food, including oddities like grasshoppers and scorpions, which we have not eaten. Our guesthouse is little a step down compared to the five star we stayed in the first night- but still nice and very clean ( when I went through customs in a wheelchair- a different story.. I'm fine now :-)- India made me sick nearly constantly) We pay $13 per night for lodging, $2 for a haircut, $4 for a one house massage Some things are expensive though.
