Picture Prompt: Dancing in the Rain

May 14, 2008 01:56

The first planet her dad took her to was one where it rained three hundred and sixty three days of the year. He’d said it had been on purpose, but the sunglasses he’d pulled out of his pocket and the surprised “ah” he’d made upon stepping directly into a puddle told Jenny and Donna everything they needed to know.

Jenny giggled as Donna teased him, and the Doctor promptly walked back into the TARDIS, giving Donna a look before rounding on his daughter. “Go to the wardrobe, and grab some wellies. And one of those rubber jacket things. And an umbrella.”

“Why?” Jenny looked over at Donna, who was doing something slightly reminiscent of a facepalm.

“Because,” the Doctor replied, manually turning her around and giving her a slight push. “I don’t want you to catch cold because you got wet. Now go.”

It didn’t take long to find a nice pair of boots, but it did take slightly longer to find a “rubber jacket thing,” mostly because she wasn’t sure what he’d meant at first. She grabbed the umbrella mostly as an afterthought, practically forgetting it in her excitement as she practically ran back to the console room. She stopped in front of Donna (who’d thrown on a rain coat in the meantime), waiting for inspection and approval. “What do you think?”

Donna grinned. “At least he’s not making you wear a rubber hat.”

“That’s not such a bad I-“the Doctor, who’d been eavesdropping, cut in, only to be cut off by Donna.

“She’s not wearing a rubber hat!” she pointed at Jenny’s boots. “I like them. Always did like daisies. Might wanna do up the buttons on the jacket, though, before your dad says you’re not water repellant enough.”

Practically bouncing with excitement, Jenny did up the buttons, as the Doctor shrugged on his jacket and protested that he wouldn’t do such a thing. Donna rolled her eyes, and went to the door with Jenny, allowing her to open the door and step out first.

Instead, she jumped. Straight into the puddle, laughing. She hopped a few feet away from the TARDIS, and grinned at the questioning looks the Doctor and Donna gave her. “Seemed like the thing to do.”

“Indeed it is!” The Doctor gave a cheerful grin, and followed suit, Donna doing the same. Soon, the three of them were dancing instead of jumping, and laughing. “Dancing in the rain! Wonderful hobby.”

“Is it common?” Jenny asked, skipping and doing a little twirl

Smiling as he watched her, the Doctor launched into explanation mode. “It is! Some societies even build entire holidays around it. This planet, though, builds their holiday around the sun. It rains every day here, except for one. So they do have holidays about dancing in the rain, but they’re not nearly as important as the sun one....”

Donna kicked some water in his direction to offset the incoming lecture, leaving him sputtering slightly and her and Jenny laughing hysterically. That was when, although she’d been a bit nervous about the traveling at first, Jenny decided that there was nothing else she’d rather be doing.
