That really stings: the hopeful ending after he had such a rough start, his father and Théoden wanting the best for him, wanting to give him a great opportunity - and they're sending him directly to his ruin. This is a very interesting take on Gríma's backstory. Using the trick of appealing to the loneliness of the odd one out, giving him attention and new things to learn is a very clever way of drawing such a challenged soul on your side! But then, Saruman knew only too well how to manipulate, didn't he?
