Title: How to Manage Christmas When You're Sick

Pairing: NONE

Rating: G

Frodo's favourite holiday had been Yule ever since he was little. He looked forward to it every season with great enthusiasm. The new Master of Bag End was renowned as a fantastic gift-giver, always taking care to give thoughtful gifts.

The year that Frodo got sick several days before Yule was the most miserable time of his life. He was feverish and coughing and sneezy the entire week of Yule. He was bedridden, and worse luck-his cousins were coming to visit. He managed to get all of the presents wrapped, and his tree up and decorated, but was unable to do any of the cooking that was expected of him. He lay in bed, feeling sorry for himself and feeling throughly ill; he even considered writing to Merry and Pippin and telling them to forget about coming.

It was Sam that finally came to the rescue. Sam bustled up to Bag End the morning of Yule Eve, after he'd finished helping his own family, a batch of cookies from his sisters under his arms. He helped Frodo to the kitchen, set him in a chair and bundled him up, and cooked him breakfast. Frodo began to tease him about fussing, and then Sam set to work on preparing the meal for the evening. Frodo had decided on duck, and instructed Sam as he set about preparing it.

The two friends bandied back and fourth as Sam cooked, Sam fussing whenever Frodo's laughter turned into coughing. Sam brewed his Gaffer's cure-all tea and had Frodo drink several cups as he cooked, and kept his Master supplied with clothes for blowing his nose. Pippin and Merry arrived late in the afternoon on a pair of ponies just as it began to snow. They had a bundle of presents under their arms, and manged to be even more exhuberant and cheerful than they usually were. They helped Sam prepare the desert-a warm apple cobbler that set everyone's mouths to watering as it cooked.

As evening descended, they ate the sumptuous food that Sam had cooked, and made short work of the desert. After that, they moved to Frodo's study-the Master making his way slowly under Sam's watchful eye. Sam started a fire going, and the four hobbits exchanged gifts. Frodo whined about about not being able to smell the lovely pine tree he'd chosen for Yule, and hiscousins laughed good-naturedly. Sam ended up giving everyone lovely hand-carved trinkets, Pippin handed out knitted scarves, Merry gave everyone a pouch of their favourite pipeweed, and Frodo had chosen a unique book for each of his friends.

Frodo started to look particularly flushed after a bit, and Sam felt his forehead and found that
his Master was running a fever. At the insistence of his cousins and close friend, Frodo turned in early
that evening.

Christmas day dawned white and cold, and although he was sick, Frodo Baggins of Bag End
was happy and filled with holiday spirit because he was surrounded and cared for by a group of the
most loving of friends.
