To Danachan
From MandyBaggins

And whatever happens, happens

Frodo sat by the fireplace, gently swirling a glass of mulled wine in between his hands. His eyes were distracted by the snow falling outside the window of Bag End, and whether or not his cousins would have still made the trip to visit him for the holidays. None of the hobbits of the Shire had ever seen such a snow as this one, and the ones who had were mostly intoxicated on the Gaffers Home Brew, so many of the younger hobbits didn’t listen to their tales with the same adoration they would have. But Frodo, he paid no attention to what the others were whispering around him, as his eyes were only fixed on the window pane.
As darkness approached the Shire, a small horse-drawn cart drew nearer and nearer to the circular green door. Frodo had now drowned his sorrows of his cousins not visiting in glass after glass of wine, but still sat solitarily on the settle near the window. As he took his last gulp of mulled wine, he heard the quiet thumping of a cart coming to a halt outside.
He almost dropped his glass. Could they have made it?
As the door opened to the howling wind, letting both snow and the slight jingle of bells in, two hobbits entered the main hall to Bag End.
Merry and Pippin.
And it seemed they brought many a present for the approaching Yule celebration.
Frodo nearly leapt out of his seat at the sight of his cousins wrapped tightly in hand-knit scarf’s and hats, their cloaks pulled around them as not to let the snow in.
“Frodo!”
“You made it!” He exclaimed, pulling them both into a hug. Though his aunts and uncles entered soon after followed by Pippins three sisters, Frodo paid no attention to them.
“Of course we did, did you think we’d miss the Yule? And at Bag End?” Merry gently ruffled Pippins curls, causing a slight cry of indignation to come from the Took’s mouth.
“Even though Bilbo isn’t here to celebrate-“
“He’s here in spirit,” finished Pippin.
“That’s very true Pip. Bilbo *isn’t* here, for the first time in ages he won’t be patrolling the halls like Farmer Maggots dogs after Pippin.”
Neither Frodo nor Pippin said anything to reply to what Merry had implied, but Frodo had a certain glint to his eyes as he thought of what could happen.
“But shouldn’t we just stay here-“
“You know you’re sisters have never noticed were gone Pip.”
“And Bilbo *never* really did say anything *against* it.”
Frodo gently put his hand on the Took’s waist, fingering a belt loop as Pippin played with the fringe on his scarf.
“Come on Pip, for old time’s sake? Remember how much fun we’d have in the cellar; the risk of getting caught, the games?”
“But where’s the risk now?” Merry looked at Frodo as Pippin said those words.
“Well…um… I’m sure that there’s *some* risk involved with… well, what we plan to do.”
“Pippin's right Frodo, without Bilbo as the challenge to get around, what’s the point?”
“What’s the point? What’s the point?” Frodo was outraged as he flung his hands into the air. He lowered his voice as he spoke the next words. “The point is that we’re connected in a way that needs to be *expressed*.”
“Expressed?”
“Exactly. And even if Bilbo isn’t here as a challenge, we still have the right to express our…” He trailed off for a second.
“Our what, Frodo?”
“Our feelings for each other. Now…” He checked to make sure no one was looking in their direction. “Come on, you fool of a Took.” He kissed Pippin on the lips hard and pulled away sharply, leaving him breathless.
“Well…now that you put it that way…”
