Chapter One: Atemu and Yugi Meet
The Pharaoh of Upper and Lower Egypt, Atemu, First of His Name, and Beloved of Ra and Horus sat upon his throne in complete shock at the sight before him.
The boy that his guards had brought before him could have passed for his brother, had he had one. The same tri-colored hair, but without his (Atemu’s) extra blond locks standing straight up amidst the black and red like lightning, and even a similar body structure, lithe and thin, though his (the boy’s) was hidden beneath the appearance of a child. And the most remarkable amethyst eyes that put even the brightest gems in the world to shame, completely different from Atemu’s narrow crimson orbs that could pierce your soul at a single glance, seeming to read your innermost desires and sins at will.
Suddenly, the amethyst eyes were gone, and the spell over him was broken. The boy, realizing that he had been staring openly at the Pharaoh, his new master, had bowed his head and prostrated himself out of fear of the Pharaoh’s reaction to his perceived insolence.
Atemu gave his head a mental shake to clear his mind from the haze that had surrounded it when his gaze had locked with that of his newest slave. Finally, he spoke. “What is your name, boy?” he demanded, his tone brooking no hesitation or lies.
The boy, he was pleased to find, did not fail him. He had obviously been a slave all or most of his life, judging by his demeanor and his quick obedience. “My name is Yugi, Great Pharaoh,” the boy said softly, his tone soft and quiet, falling on the Pharaoh’s ears like music. He was not the only one affected, Atemu noticed, but this pleased him all the more. This enchanting boy was all his. He would personally make sure of that.
“Yugi, hm?” the Pharaoh murmured. “How old are you, Yugi?” His thought was that the boy couldn’t be much older than ten, given his appearance. He could tell that Yugi, though they had not yet stood side by side, was about a head shorter than him, who even at seventeen years of age was shorter of stature than any of his predecessors.
Thus it was a surprise when the boy replied with: “Sixteen summers, My Pharaoh.” He spoke in the same soft musical voice as before. Atemu, despite his shock, could not help but believe him. Yugi, like him, was apparently just short for his age, his child-like appearance making him seem even younger than his small stature suggested.
“Very well,” Atemu intoned, finding his voice again. “You will serve me personally, taking orders from no one but my self from this day onward. Do you understand?”
“Yes, My Pharaoh,” Yugi replied. Atemu could hear the fear in his new slave’s voice, though his body was perfectly still. Yugi had indeed been a slave for a long time, having been taught to control his body’s reactions, though he wasn’t always able to control his voice when his emotions were strong. And right now, he was terrified. Never in his life had he ever dreamed that he would be here, before the Pharaoh, about to enter his service, probably for the rest of his life, or the Pharaoh’s, whichever came first.
He was no stranger to being a personal slave, having always been one since he was old enough to understand his station in life, at the tender age of four years. But he had never served anyone higher in status than a minor lord, in a province far from here.
He was roused from his thoughts when the Pharaoh spoke again. “Very good. Jou, Honda, take him to the baths and have him cleaned and dressed. The servants will know what to do. Then take him to my chambers and wait there for me. I won’t be long.”
“Yes, My Pharaoh,” Jou and Honda, the two guards that had brought Yugi in, intoned, bowing deeply. Then, Jou carefully helped Yugi to his feet. The guards bowed again, and Yugi as well, before the two young men led the Pharaoh’s new slave from the throne room and deeper into the palace.
Silence feel in the throne room after the three had left, leaving the Pharaoh and his High Priest alone.
“Well, what do you think, Seth?” Atemu asked, turning to his most trusted friend and only living kinsman. Seth smiled, a look so different from his usual smirk that spoke of his domination over almost every situation. When he and the Pharaoh were alone, that expression had no place in their conversations.
“He is beautiful,” Seth replied, looking upon his younger kinsman fondly. “I wish you the best, My Pharaoh.” Atemu had always been burdened by the weight of the Crown, having taken the throne before he was fully prepared, due to the untimely death of his father, Pharaoh Akunumkanon. It was Seth that Atemu always turned to when his thoughts were heaviest and were the most difficult to bear. It had always been an honor to Seth, one that he would never like to see disappear.
“Thank you, Cousin,” Atemu said. “Your support has always meant so much to me. At times, I feel that you would make a better ruler than I ever could.”
“I am honored, Atemu, but my place is beside you, not in place of you. I will be here for you as long as the Gods will it,” Seth replied, honestly touched by Atemu’s obviously high regard for him.
Atemu smiled at him as he rose from the throne and stepped down from the dais so that he stood next to his cousin, thought he had to tilt his head back to look into Seth's piercing blue eyes. “Thank you, Seth,” he said simply, knowing that his cousin would understand what he meant. He always had.
Seth nodded in acknowledgement. “Do you have any plans tonight?” he asked.
“No, I don’t,” Atemu answered.
“Then eat dinner with me, in my chambers,” Seth replied. “And bring Yugi, if you wish. My servants will provide for all of us, so there’s no need for Yugi to do anything.” He could tell that Atemu was already besotted with the boy and he hoped to make it easier for the boy to adjust to his new master and his court. Yugi didn’t bear the marks of a harsh life of manual labor, probably being much too small for such tasks.
“Thank you, Seth. We’ll be there at sundown. How does that sound?” Atemu replied.
“Perfect. I’ll see you then,” Seth answered. He bowed quickly and left to attend to his other duties that waited for him. Atemu watched him leave, privately amused by his cousin's antics. He eventually rose and left the throne room as well, heading for his private chambers...and his new slave.
