Author's note: Several factors influenced this. One an discussion of the difference between Faramir in the books and the films. Two a lecture I gave to my class on the Roman Virtues. Three Fileg, who as always without meaning to I know, makes me think more about Faramir than I should whilst lecturing. Faramir by the way makes an absolutely outstanding example of Roman citizenship. I hope Elessar appreciates that. :-) I now feel like writing fifteen drabbles showing how he fits each one. Frightening.

Today we ride to death. We know it. Mithrandir tells me to stay, to disobey a direct order. He does not understand that I can not. He tells me my father loves me. It may be true, but it changes nothing. I follow not father's order; I obey the Steward, to almost certain death. Not becuase we wish to die, no sane man wishes death, but that with our lives we purchase a few more days, even moments of freedom for Minas Tirith, for the people throwing flowers in our path. Fifteen virtues make a man. I lead men who embody all. For Gondor.
