Finished outlining the specialist group:
The Specialist Group
The characters that comprise the specialist group are truly as the name implies-very specialized. Each character type in this group is unique in some way and lends its own particular flavor and bag of tricks to the adventuring party. Character types from the specialist group are best played by experienced players who can appreciate (and exploit) their respective subtleties.
- Paladin
Whereas priests embody the voices of their gods, paladins instead embody their fists. Paladins are the “divine enforcers”, so to speak-powerful warriors bolstered by divine power. Like priests, paladins serve only a single god and receive that god or goddess’s blessing, as well as a specialized set of powers known as devotions. Devotions differ for each of the deities to which a paladin may devote his or her services, but all share a common goal-the furtherance of that god’s wishes or itinerary. Though they can be highly specialized, paladins are always a worthwhile addition to any adventuring party.
- Witch
The ability to manipulate energy without going to the trouble of casting spells or invoking rituals is the ken of the witch. Known as “charmers” in ages past, witches exert their influence over matter and energy using only their minds (not using internal energy, as magi)-a skill echoed in structure and method only by the psions. There are three types of witches: photic witches, who deal only in tricks of light and shadow; temporal witches, who mold and influence time; and etheric witches, who effect manifestations of matter and elements. Witches are often very unusual in appearance, choosing to ornament themselves with symbolic objects and totems rather than conventional clothing. A necklace of blanched bones or a veil of braided paper is a perfect example of this.
- Psion
Psions use their natural ability to concentrate their mental energies to perceive and affect reality. They function much the same way that witches do-only by tapping into the very essence of their minds do they achieve their ends. Psions may inspire emotions and imperatives in their fellow beings or (de)construct physical objects with commands of will. Psions of great experience and power can warp the fabrics of both reality and thought on a whim, though the risk of sanity loss effectively precludes the abuse of this power.
- Arcanix
The arcanix qualifies in function as the hybrid offspring of a warrior and a mage. Arcanixi use their highly specialized magics, called arcanae (singularly, arcana), to imbue their weapons and armor with powerful charms and augmentations that serve their needs in combat. These arcanae are capable of producing a multitude of effects from something as simple as engulfing a sword with magical fire to a large explosion that is triggered when one of the arcanix’s arrows strikes its target. Arcanixi access the energies required to work their magics much the same way as mages do-the difference is that the effects rendered by arcanae are far less direct (but ultimately, no less powerful) than those of spells or rituals.
