Alright, get your image ready. Crop, sharpen, all that jazz. Then dulicate your image and desaturate the dulicated layer, and set it to "Overlay" at 100%opacity.
Create a new layer and fill it with Solid color: #000000 (black) and then set that layer to "Color" at Opacity 30%
Create a new layer and fill it with Solid color: #B49848 Set that to "Soft light" at Opacity 80%
Then I took this brush by tihana:
Then I Flip Horizontal-ed it (go to Image + Rotate Canvas + Flip horizontal) and then using I think the Desaturate tool, I took out the pink color on the left. So it ended looking like this:
Then set that to "Screen". Then I put a white border on mine.

See what I mean? I'm wierd. For that picture I didn't want the pink on Sawyer. It made the coloring too light there. You will have to mess around with coloring alot because every picture has it's own coloring. So even if you follow any tutorial it's going to look differant and you have to find out how to make it work. Like fiddleding with the opacity. If I were you I would start looking around the icon_tutorial community. Also, when you like an icon maker look at their resource list for places to get brushes and textures! That's what I do. :p
Instead of JUST following tutorials I like to read them and just get a general feel for making the icon. What colors they use, things like that. My favorite thing to do is the layer with Solid color Black, and set it to color. It makes the icon totally black and white as you see but you mess around with the opacity and it gives great coloring!

Yes, I think in tihana's journal it says that they are Light brushes or I may be totally wrong and they are Light textures. Not sure. I dont really know the differance. :p
