He hears her name tossed around casually at the nurses' station in the ER and shrugs it off, determined to continue on with his day as planned. They say it again, paired with the words ‘Man named Sawyer’, and before he can stop himself he’s approaching them and asking where she is.
She’s been transferred out of the ER, up to the third floor, and it take him a moment to acknowledge that the third floor houses labour and delivery, and antenatal care. He picks at the edge of his lab coat while the elevator jerks its way upstairs, finally releasing him to the ‘baby floor’.
The nurse at the desk gives him a strange look when he asks for her room number and only gives it to him after a certain amount of bribing. He hesitates at the doorway and knocks, only entering when he hears a soft voice say,
“Come in.”
She looks pale, draped in a white hospital gown and covered in white hospital sheets, and her mouth goes slack when he steps inside,
“Jack?”
He waits until he’s standing at the end of her bed before saying, “Juliet.”
“What’re you doing here?”
“I work here.”
“What are you doing here?” She corrects, gesturing around the labour and delivery room.
“I heard they’d admitted you.”
She nods, waiting for him to ask.
He doesn’t disappoint, “How’d you get back?”
Though she expected the question, he doesn’t expect a reply and she doesn’t give one, “It doesn’t matter.”
“Where’s Sawyer?”
Her eyes are marked with confusion, “What?”
“The nurses, they said you were asking for him when you first came in.”
“He’s not here.” Her voice is quiet and she looks down, fingertips brushing the curve of her belly.
Jack’s taken aback once more, “It’s Sawyer’s?”
She nods but doesn’t speak, suddenly sucking in a quick breath and gripping the linens tightly in her fists as pain burns deep within her. He stays at the end of the bed and shifts from foot to foot before asking,
“You want me to stay?”
She shakes her head, “No.”
He nods, “Alright.”
He leaves the room but spends the remainder of the day checking on her progress between surgeries. Six hours later she gives birth to a six pound, eight ounce baby girl named Elisabeth Anne Burke. He watches her through the glass surrounding the nursery, marvelling at the light blue of her eyes and her wispy, blonde hair.
He leaves the pair for the night but goes in the next morning with a bouquet of flowers and a small stuffed bear from the gift shop. Juliet smiles when he places them at her bedside and thanks him, her face beaming despite the lines of exhaustion framing her eyes.
“You’re welcome.” He says, before reaching down to squeeze her thin shoulder, “I’m glad you’re home.”

Although I'm dying to know what happened with Sawyer, I do like the chance meeting here :) I can totally see a nervous Jack shifting at the end of the bed not knowing exactly what to do.
