My G1 lost its Android App store application, and its Google map app. The first I should be get around via the web site, but the web site won't give me back my google maps, which I do like and use

Once you get the Market back, you should be able to download Google maps from it... I think.

Would it right itself with a factory reset?

Probably not, as the note on the reset command in the phone says it doesn't effect preinstalled apps.
