There are a few birthdays worth celebrating. My latest one was not one of them. It's not old enough to be grateful for the time left, nor young enough to be a milestone...however, this is one birthday I will NEVER forget.
Those of you reading my LJ will be familiar with my favourite band. If you're not aware, check them out:
http://www.myspace.com/odessamusic...in my humble and unbiased opinion, one of the very coolest bands to ever rock New Zealand. I've been loving them for 6 years, and now they're finally calling it a day. I've been to OdESSA shows with a fever, stomach pains, extreme fatigue, colds, I've travelled across the country to watch them play. I've been a little obsessed - but then again, what do you do when you find music that makes you glad to be alive?
Anyway, my darling Megan decided that she was going to take me out to a belated birthday treat. We got home from work, and although I was due to play a gig at 10.30 that night, she INSISTED that I be free for the first part of the evening as we were going to do something romantic and couply - or so I thought....
Turns out, she was fluffing around, getting dressed, acting all indecisive about what to wear and the evening was wearing on. It seemed like we were never going to get out of the house! Finally we left, me still with no idea what she intended for us. Then we had to return home to retrieve the camera, then left again. Finally, she told me we were heading for the band practice space to "pick up my present". Drove to the jamspace. Parked the car. All the lights in the space were off, but I could vaguely hear some horrible tinny garage music, like one of the bands was practicing in there. Then we got inside, and the music got clearer. I could feel the goofiest grin ever on my face as we opened the doors to the practice room and there....
OdESSA were performing! Not practicing, but performing for me. And in the room were a couple of dozen of my most amazing friends, all shouting; "SURPRISE!!!" I couldn't speak.
So: my partner had managed to completely deceive me about the nature of my birthday surprise, and had thrown together the things I love most in life: music and friends. Not just that, but ridiculously talented, attractive, wonderful, caring, loving, fantastic human beings - not all of my friends, but enough to let me know that I am a very lucky guy.
So, after a couple of hours of hugs, tears, dancing, cookies and conversation, I got to go be a rock star on stage, before going home with a woman who makes me feel loved.
It's a nice life. I'm so lucky :-)
