All of his life Chanyeol had been doing what his parents told him to, following their words closely, trying not to mess anything up, he thought that all of that would pay off when he grew up, but in the end, it was just the way he didn’t want to, them controlling his own life.
Even if they’re like this, Chanyeol can’t make himself blame them, he knows they care, or else they’d have never appeared at his baseball games, though, nowadays Chanyeol is not really into baseball like before.
That’s why most of his time he spends it at the library-coffee shop downtown, a place where they won’t accuse him of not studying - it’s a library after all - and where he can do what he wants, from just getting some coffee to book reading to staring out at the window or chatting with the barista.
He’s good at observation, he knows most of the people that frequent the place regularly, he scans the place to see who’s here today. Kim Jongin and his friend Sehun are doing their school homework, Taekwoon just wants to be at peace and read his book, he can see Junmyeon sipping a cup of what looks like tea while he reads the newspaper and there’s another person a few meters away from him with his face hidden behind a book. Chanyeol doesn’t recognize the person, be it his hair, his hand, face or type of clothing, the person or comes here when Chanyeol is not or the person is new.
Either way, Chanyeol is friendly and he has nothing to do, he finished reading one of his books and he just ate a piece of pie what else he has to do? Nothing, so that’s why he gets up from his current seat and walks up to the stranger.
He doesn’t say anything, he just takes the vacant seat in front of the man and waits for him to notice his presence, which is quite quick he may say.
“Hello?” the man greets him with a half smile, putting it down with the bookmark in the middle of it. “May I help you?”
“Hi,” Chanyeol replies with a smile. “I’m Chanyeol, nice to meet you, I’ve never seen you around.”
“Can I be direct with you?” the man asks and Chanyeol nods. “Are you openly flirting with me or are you just default happy like this when talking to a stranger?”
Chanyeol is not taken aback by this man’s questions, because Taekwoon almost hit him with a book when he first talked to him and Junmyeon almost knocked his tea down when he suddenly introduced himself, Chanyeol is used to people being surprised at his forwardness.
“I’m not flirting with you,” Chanyeol laughs. “Though, now it looks like you’re disappointed that I wasn’t.”
The man stares at Chanyeol, amused.
“Hakyeon,” he says extending a hand. “Cha Hakyeon.”
“Park Chanyeol,” he replies taking the hand and shaking it. ”And just like I said, I’ve never seen you around. It’s funny because I know every single person that comes here.”
“Well,” Hakyeon puts the book on top of the coffee table in front of them. “I’m not always here, but I have seen you around before.”
Chanyeol stares at Hakyeon, confused, he’s quite sure that he is a good observant, how did he even let Hakyeon slip past his eyes? Of course, Hakyeon is not incredible tall like Taekwoon or Sehun and he doesn’t actually have a different hair color like Joonmyun or Jongin, but he’s not someone to pass unnoticed.
Chanyeol is truthfully intrigued.
“I’m sorry, I’m joking,” Hakyeon says and Chanyeol hears Taekwoon scoffing from his seat. “Taekwoon there is my friend,” Chanyeol hears Taekwoon scoffing again. “And I decided to just follow him to that place he goes almost everyday and never told me about, especially since I know the place.”
“So you’re a stalker.” Chanyeol whispers and Hakyeon turns to look at him with the most offended expression Chanyeol have witnessed, he also notices Taekwoon hiding his face with the book he’s reading, probably holding his laughter or he’s just not really interested.
“Excuse,” Hakyeon says baffled. “Excuse me???? I would never stalk someone.”
Chanyeol crosses his legs.
“How are you even friends with Taekwoon? Enlighten me.” Chanyeol requests and Hakyeon huffs, rolling his eyes.
“There is no explanation, it just happened, I’m loud, he’s silent, opposites attract and that’s about it,” Hakyeon finishes his short explanation and Chanyeol nods, fair enough. “We work at the same place plus we studied together.”
“I see, but may I add something to your logic,” Chanyeol grins and watches as Taekwoon looks at both of them with a still amused expression that Hakyeon misses. “If opposites attract, similars attract ten times more.”
Hakyeon does some thinking about Chanyeol phrasing and nods to himself.
“You are possibly right,” he starts and side eyes Chanyeol. “But you lied to me.”
“How come?” Chanyeol demands with delight on his tone of voice.
“You said you weren’t openly flirting with me when you clearly are.” Hakyeon presses his teeth together and sucks on air, them he pouts and all Chanyeol can do is pretend he’s not being affected. To be very honest, Chanyeol didn’t really notice what he was doing because he’s usually like this, but now that Hakyeon pointed it out, it does look like he was.
Taekwoon only observes.
The next day, when Chanyeol is out of college, he runs to the library-coffee shop as usual, today he has some of his assignments with him, being kind of forced to take law sucks because the projects are killing him and he’d rather play guitar the whole day and take music, but he can’t because, according to his parents, this is not a respectable course for him to major in.
Taekwoon is already there, not reading a book, but busy in front of a laptop, Sehun and Jongin are only chatting and Chanyeol sights Jongdae behind the counter.
“Busy day?” he asks Jongdae, the barista who’s making some coffee for the customers at the other side of the room.
“Not really,” Jongdae replies, all of his attention not on Chanyeol. “Saw Sehun and Jongin ditching classes earlier, Minseok passed by and bought a slice of cheesecake, Joonmyun got a cupcake and flew to work.”
Chanyeol nods, ordering one latte and a panini then finding an empty table to sit and, later on find, a new book to read - he may or may not be itching to read Haruki Murakami’s new work.
It’s a few minutes after he’s seated and that the sights Hakyeon pushing the door open, Chanyeol smiles and he also doesn’t miss the distressed look all over Taekwoon’s blank expression - when he does the eyebrow thing it actually means something -, much to Taekwoon’s apparent relief, Hakyeon jumps his way towards Chanyeol, who just stares as he nears him.
“Good evening, sir,” Hakyeon says and offers him a bow with his head, fighting back a smile. “Is this seat vacant?”
“Do you want it to be?” Chanyeol lifts his head to meet Hakyeon’s eyes, Hakyeon shoots him a look and before pulling the chair out for him to sit he waves at Taekwoon who is glancing at them from his laptop, but who also quickly averts his gaze and goes back to what he was doing before.
“I don’t know, you ask too much,” Hakyeon licks his lips and waves at Jongdae, gesturing something with his hand that Chanyeol finds ridiculous, but which Jongdae just nods to. “Don’t you know that it’s rude to reply someone’s question with another question, that throws me off, don’t do it.”
Chanyeol agrees and they fall into a comfortable silence, Jongdae comes to the table a few minutes later with Hakyeon's order and leaves glancing at Hakyeon on his way back to the counter.
"Does he know you? Do you know him? Am I missing something?" Chanyeol jokingly asks and receives the raise of a brow from Hakyeon.
"I think it's been a while since I've known Jongdae," Hakyeon sips his cup and frowns, looking over at Jongdae who's laughing at him. "He switched my coffee for an americano, again."
Chanyeol is surprised at how it looks like Hakyeon knows all of his friends.
After that, Chanyeol settles to a routine of college - coffee - book reading - talking to Hakyeon - more coffee - homework - home - bed. It’s a comfortable routine, though, his parents decide to ask him about college and how much he’s liking it every once in a while, which he tends to return with a smile to let them believe he’s happy with it - but may he admit, that nowadays he’s actually starting to like it.
It feels like everything is at its right place - and maybe they are -, but it doesn’t stop Chanyeol from questioning how Hakyeon knew him when he didn’t and why the people at the coffee shop look like they also knew him before he did, which is strange, because, just like Chanyeol keeps on reminding himself, he knows everybody that goes there regularly.
“I used to come here everyday before college started to get too harsh on me and kept me busy almost the whole day,” Hakyeon tells Chanyeol at some random day in which they’re already with their cups in front of them and comfortably sat one in front of another. “That was almost two years ago and I graduated already.”
Makes sense, Chanyeol thinks and automatically nods his head while he pretends to read his book, because in reality he has been catching himself thinking a little too much about Hakyeon and his gaze always floats towards his figure, be it when they’re talking about something mundane like the weather or be it when they’re supposed to be reading their books or eating or something that doesn’t mean that they’ll interact with each other, it’s been happening a lot recently.
He likes to be honest to himself, and to be really honest, Chanyeol would say that he had developed something that nears the crush zone with Hakyeon, he doesn’t know if Hakyeon feels the same about him - he wishes he does -, but he’s happy with the current situation they have in hands, from daily talks about work for Hakyeon and college for Chanyeol, he thinks that maybe that’s what he needed, not know everybody that frequents the establishment, but know only one person as better as he knows himself - he’s working in it right now.
“So now you’re a working man, huh?” Chanyeol teases and Hakyeon scoffs at him, fixing his fringe with his fingers and them sipping his drink. “Funny how you’re always here now.”
“I used to spend my free time after work surfing the internet at home, so at least now I make good use of it with books, Taekwoon knows about it, right?” Hakyeon looks at his friend that is at the table next to them writing something down to a notebook. Taekwoon raises his head at the mention of his name.
“Well-”
“See?” Hakyeon cuts Taekwoon and turns back to Chanyeol.
Taekwoon looks like everything, but amused - different from Chanyeol who’s trying to hold his laughter to not get a mad Taekwoon boring holes at the back of his head.
“If you put like this,” Chanyeol licks his lips and closes the book that he wasn’t actually reading, putting it next to his cup and rubbing the back of his neck. “I don’t get a single thing.”
Hakyeon and Chanyeol take notice of Taekwoon getting up from his table and dragging his chair to sit at the same as theirs.
“So the truth is,” Taekwoon says while glaring at Hakyeon, Chanyeol is surprised that Taekwoon is speaking on his own and not because they asked him something, well, Hakyeon did but that’s probably not the point here. “Hakyeon decided to follow me back from work a few weeks ago, you know, we work at a chemistry laboratory, and he saw that I was still coming to the place we went when we were a little younger,” he makes a pause to lick his lips and sigh. “Cutting this short, he saw you being friendly yet lonely and he got interested.”
Hakyeon widens his eyes and raises a hand to slap Taekwoon’s shoulder, but retreats when he receives a glare.
“That’s not-”
“It’s true,” Taekwoon cuts in and gets up. “Now if you excuse me, I have a few things to do at home, I’m leaving.”
They fall into silence, only the ringing of the door when Taekwoon leaves is heard and neither Chanyeol nor Hakyeon look like they’re going to take initiative to say something.
"So," Chanyeol says catching Hakyeon's attention. "Do you always come here?"
Hakyeon laughs at him, a pretty smile forming on his lips as he shakes his head, which doesn't really mean anything, but Chanyeol knows that if he wasn't laughing, he'd be making fun of him because of his cliche line. Chanyeol runs a hand through his hair, embarrassment written all over his face and Hakyeon taps Chanyeol’s hand that's right on top of the book.
"Now I do."
