Name: Hatake Kakashi
Fandom: Naruto (manga)
History link: http://naruto.wikia.com/wiki/Hatake_Kakashi. However, as I'm taking him from the manga only, you can ignore anything that says “In the anime.”
Age: 29
Canon point: I'll be taking Kakashi from just before the end of what's called the Five Kaze Summit arc, specifically chapter 488. Kakashi has just gotten back from seeing Sasuke for the first time since he betrayed the Leaf, and from finding out about Madara's plan. Now he's ready to prepare for war, and to step up as the leader of his village (though in canon, it turns out he doesn't have to: it's just more fun if he doesn't know that.)

Personality: Kakashi has a very balanced and well-rounded personality, so much so that seeing Kakashi in different situations can actually be surprising to people who don't know him that well. He can come of as being lazy and flippant, or he can be completely ruthless and fierce, depending on what is called for at the time. No matter how he is acting, however, Kakashi is always aware of what is going on around him, and is very rarely taken by surprise in the series.

During one of Kakashi's first appearances, he walks into a prank: Naruto had set up a chalkboard eraser to fall on his head since he was late. He acts completely oblivious to it, however, leading Team 7 to wonder about the quality of their Jounin. This is Kakashi's flippant side at play. He'll also read porn during non-serious fights, or meetings, or really, whenever he doesn't have to take anything super seriously. He's also always late, which has much deeper meaning, but I'll go into that later. He feels no remorse about holding up his team for hours, and when he arrives, Kakashi always gives some nonsensical excuse such as having a black cat cross his path, or getting lost on the road of life. Someone who just sees this side of Kakashi might wonder how he got the position he has in his world, or so earned the esteem of his fellows that he nearly becomes the Hokage, or the leader of his entire village.

But as he says early on, a ninja must see underneath the underneath, and such is the case with Kakashi's slacker side. Even when he is reading, he can still fight very effectively. More importantly, he doesn't keep reading when the situation becomes one that demands his full attention. He's not actually lazy, but instead uses this guise to throw people off about him. People don't take him seriously, and that means he's free to judge their reactions and learn about him. I mentioned the eraser prank earlier, and how Kakashi let it hit him, despite being a skilled enough ninja to see it from a mile away (perhaps literally). This was so he could see how his brand new subordinates would each react to the prank. Naruto cheered, Sakura said she tried to stop him, and Sasuke acts completely uninvolved. After seeing this, Kakashi was immediately able to give his first impression of the team: that he doesn't like them. And again, the reason for this will also be covered later. All in all, the flippant side is a good cover for throwing people off.

Then there is Kakashi's truest personality, which comes out in situations that require his serious attention. Kakashi is a ninja, and as such he is calculating, perceptive, decisive, and utterly ruthless when necessary. We see in the fight with Zabuza, for example, that he doesn't hesitate to kill an opponent who will not stand down. He also doesn't put up with lies, though if a person has a good enough reason, he will forgive them for lying. In his battles Kakashi thinks ahead, and does everything necessary to win, even if it costs him physically. In the fight with Zabuza, Kakashi literally puts himself in a state where he can't move for days, because that was what it took to win the fight. The same thing happens later in the series against Deidara, when Kakashi uses the Mangekyou Sharingan multiple times though it is neither a perfected technique, nor one he can use without care. It leaves him in such a state afterwards that he must be carried by Gai (something that didn't at all please him), and still stay in a hospital for a long period. Of course he had good reason for what he did in both cases: if he hadn't done these things, he and the people present would have died. This also shows that Kakashi sees a bigger picture: what is necessary to victory, and to the safety of those around him.

And that brings me to teamwork. If there was any one word that summed up Kakashi's values, teamwork would be it. While it goes against ninja law to sacrifice the mission for the take of the team, Kakashi is more than willing to do so. This is because of Obito, the person who he considers his best friend, and who died because Kakashi hesitated to save a teammate because of ninja law. He had tried to place that law above all else because of how his father was shamed for abandoning a mission to such a degree that he committed suicide. In his heart, however, I think Kakashi didn't want to abandon his friends, and when Obito called a person who left behind their comrades less than trash, it shook Kakashi, then around thirteen, to his very core. Obito's resultant death also impacted Kakashi to such a degree that it changed his entire philosophy (and also his promptness; Kakashi's lateness was a habit directly taken from Obito). Years later, when he first meets Team 7, he says he doesn't like them because he immediately sees that as they are, Sasuke, Sakura, and Naruto aren't a cohesive team. They'll work individually to their own peril, failing because they won't come together. This also is made clear when one looks at how many people Kakashi had passed as Genin before Team 7: absolutely none. The test was designed to see how the trainee ninjas would act in a situation that seemed to pit them against each other, and that required them to break the established rules (don't feed Naruto or you fail) for the sake of their suffering teammate. Because the three are willing to defy Kakashi, he passes Team 7, and repeats the lesson he learned from Obito: those who break ninja law are considered trash, but those who don't care for their companions are lower than trash. Thus, Kakashi will not hesitate to save his team members, and to do anything in his power to make sure they'll succeed.

However, unlike the more typical anime character that might have the same attitude and thus would sugarcoat their words, Kakashi has no desire to handle those around him with kid gloves. He will speak harshly when it is necessary, such as saying they'll have to abandon a mission to take care of Naruto because he was hurt when he froze in battle. On the surface, it sounds cruel. But Kakashi knows Naruto's personality, and said that specifically so Naruto would gain the determination not only to go on, but to fight next time he faced an attack. Those were the words Naruto needed to hear in order to progress, so Kakashi said them. He'll also do what he needs to do to make sure people listen, such as tying Sasuke to a tree so he won't run away while Kakashi preaches.

Kakashi is balanced, and his experience makes him capable of handling a great deal. But under that is something that isn't so addressed in the series thus far, but has made its presence known. Kakashi is still human, and because of that, he's limited. He's not the most powerful in the series, nor does he begrudge anyone for being stronger than him. But because he isn't a superman, he has to deal with loss just like the rest of them. Unlike many, however, Kakashi doesn't seem to be the kind to vent to just anyone. When the Third Hokage is killed, Kakashi arrives early to the funeral, only to leave shortly after because he didn't know what to say. He instead went to the monument for fallen heroes, as he does frequently (which is the other part of why he's always late), in order to "talk" to Obito. A woman who used to work with Kakashi as part of ANBU arrives shortly thereafter. He tells her very little that we see, and that is one of the few times we see him open up about himself in canon, yet it's clear just how much regret and sorrow he feels.

One of the other times is when he has Sasuke tied to the tree, and is trying to convince him to give up his quest for revenge. Sasuke asks Kakashi what he would do if Sasuke were to kill the one he loved most. Kakashi admitted that he would probably seek revenge, except that everyone that qualified in his case had already been killed. When he says this, he is smiling. This making light of something that so profoundly affected him to me doesn't show that he's resolved his feelings, but that he's living on anyway. I think this is because he knows the role he plays to others, and that they depend on him to be strong and stable. He is trying to act like a ninja should-removed from his emotions. So far he's been able to handle it that way, but we get enough hints to be able to say that he hasn't yet settled any of those issues. This personally makes me wonder what he would do if he were to lose someone else now. Again, we get a hint of it when Haku dies for Zabuza. Zabuza called Haku a useful tool, and for we see what's a truly emotional response from Kakashi as he closes Haku's eyes and tells Naruto to stay out of his fight.

Another revealing incident is when Asuma is killed by Hidan of Akatsuki. While we don't see anything in canon that reveals Kakashi and Asuma were particularly close, Kakashi steps in when he doesn't have to so that Asuma's team can go out to take on Hidan. I think this is more for them than for himself, because Kakashi, when Obito was killed, wasn't powerful enough to defeat the enemies there alone-he had to be saved by his teacher. In this case, despite being higher ranked than any of in the ninja there, he plays the role Shikamaru assigns him. Tactically, this is the best move, but I also think that he takes this back seat purposely so the three involved can take the lead on avenging their teacher. He knows from his own experience how being unable to complete that revenge feels, and he doesn't want that to be the experience of Shikamaru and the others. The difference between this case and Sasuke is that Sasuke is willing to throw away everything for revenge, while Shikamaru and the others aren't.

In more recent canon, it's also becoming clear how much Kakashi regrets his failures. When he dies at the hands of Pain, his thoughts are apologies to the people he's failed: specifically, Obito. Additionally, it's also shown in his reunion with Sasuke. When he sees that Sakura's trying to kill Sasuke, he apologies to her for saying unnecessary things back when he was trying to reassure her, and himself, that things would go back to the way they were. Then he once again tries to convince Sasuke to give up revenge, but when Sasuke refuses, Kakashi decides he'll be the one to kill his former student as part of his duty as a teacher. It's a fight he doesn't even want Naruto to be involved in, for the sake of Naruto surviving to obtain his dream of becoming Hokage. Kakashi isn't one who forgives himself easily, if at all.

In light of this, and his complete refusal to even hear Rin's feelings for him after Obito's death, I've speculated that Kakashi has never had a romantic relationship with anyone. It's head canon, but I don't think Kakashi would allow himself that sort of closeness with another person. Everyone around him, even the people he cares for most, are kept at a distance. None of his students know about his past, for example, because he's never told them. And while he does read erotic novels in public, actually talking about them (as detailed below) doesn't give the impression that sexuality is something he's comfortable discussing.

Then there are the other details that add charm to his overall character. For example, while Kakashi will openly read erotic novels in public, he actually gets embarrassed if he has to read them out loud. This is surprising, because the lines read were relatively harmless, particularly out of context. Another thing is that he hates spoilers; Naruto is able to trick him into closing his eyes and covering his ears by threatening to reveal the ending to a book Kakashi had yet to read, and thus wins the fight they were in. He also has, as Kakashi himself puts it, a way with words. This really means that he knows how to flatter people the right way to get them to do what he wants, such as telling Yamato that he respects him, and thus gets him to pay for ramen. And then there is his covered face. We never see beneath the cover in canon, outside of speculation. This isn't something Kakashi really does on purpose, but he's just sadistic enough to enjoy how people wonder as a consequence of it. On the other hand, when he does take off his mask one time to eat ramen in a special omake, he's left confused when the owner and waitress of the ramen shop stare at him afterwards. Because there are hearts in the waitress's eyes, it's generally assumed that he's very handsome, but apparently, Kakashi is unaware of the fact, since he's just lost at their reactions. Notably, he's also learned how to eat very quickly according to this same omake, so it's all but impossible to actually see his face.

Powers/Abilities: ...oh boy.

So even in terms of Naruto, Kakashi is a bit of a powerhouse. He's one of the strongest characters in the series, with a natural talent for being a ninja: a genius son of a genius father. He's got all the basics down: walking on walls/water/other assorted surfaces, tracking, trap-making, stealth, speed, etc. He's incredibly proficient with hand to hand fighting (taijutsu) and illusionary arts (genjutsu), but his specialty is ninjutsu, or the ninja arts.. This is mostly due to his use of his left eye, which is a Sharingan. This trademark kekkei genkai (bloodline limit) of the Uchiha clan was gifted to him, and Kakashi has taken to it incredibly well, although he has to keep it covered when it's not in use so it doesn't drain his chakra (life-energy) completely.

The Sharingan is quite useful in that it greatly increases the user's ability to see movement. The primary function of the Sharingan is to copy the techniques and abilities of other ninja, and Kakashi has certainly taken advantage of it: having copied over 1000 techniques, he's known throughout his world as “Sharingan Kakashi.” But since all 1000 of those techniques have not been revealed, so I can't list them here-thank goodness. However, some of those abilities include (deep breath):

Kage Bushin: The ability to make solid clones of oneself. The user's chakra is split evenly among the clones, and each clone has all the abilities of the original. Additionally, anything a clone learns is also learned by the original once the clone is released, either on purpose or by taking a hit from an opponent. Kakashi's seen with a max of two or three of these clones at once, and he can only maintain them for a short period of time.

Raiton Kage Bunshin: A clone similar to the above, but that is made of lightning. If the clone is struck it will turn back into lightning, which can then shock the opponent should contact be made.

Suikoudan: The user can create a column of water to strike at their opponent.

Suiryuudan: The same as above, except the water takes the form of a dragon.

Daibakufu: The user can create a massive waterfall to sweep away their opponents.

Doryuuheki: By placing his hands on the ground, the user can create a massive mud wall to form. Kakashi's is marked by four canine heads.

Shinjuu Zanshu: A fun one. The user can travel underground to a target, which he'll then pull down, leaving only the head exposed.

Rasengan: The user forms a ball of chakra in their hand that causes a great deal of destruction on impact. Unlike the other listed techniques, it requires no hand seals, and does not deal with any given element. Rasengan itself is an incomplete technique that was designed to be combined with an element for greater power; Kakashi does not have the ability to do this final combination. Also, Kakashi might have actually been taught this one by his Sensei, but it fits better in this list.

...And that's not all of them. Nor is any cap given within the series to the number of techniques that can be copied, but there are some limitations. First and foremost, nothing would ever be copied without player permission. In canon, the copying abilities of Sharingan are also limited to techniques that are not Kekkei Genkai, or bloodline limits. How I defined this for another game was basically by saying anything that can be taught is pretty much up for grabs, provided Kakashi would have the ability to do it anyway. This includes anything physical, and some energy-based techniques. However, canon makes a point of saying that only certain special people can draw energy from outside of the body, and Kakashi is not this sort of snowflake. So additionally, the ability must use whatever the canon's equivalent of chakra is. In Bleach, for example, Shinigami abilities could be copied, as they use the energy of the shinigami themselves. The Quincy abilities, however, rely on energy drawn from outside of the user, and are thus off-limits. Alchemy from Full Metal Alchemist would also be out.

But wait! Just when you thought the Sharingan couldn't get any more godmodey, it evolves, literally, into Mangekyou Sharingan! Kakashi's ability to use the Mangekyou is extremely limited due to how much chakra it takes; he's already died once from overusing the technique of his Mangekyou, Kamui. Kamui allows Kakashi to focus on a target and bend the area around it until that target is transported to another location. This could be all or part of an object or person.

On top of all this, Kakashi's also developed his own technique. Originally called Chidori, Kakashi's version was given the name Raikiri because he used it to cut a bolt of lightning in two. Activated chakra is focused in the user's hand in the form of lightning. By then running at their target at high speed, the chakra can be used to pierce through almost anything. It's only safe to use in conjunction with the Sharingan, however, as the technique leaves it's user blind and thus vulnerable to an enemy's counterattack. He also seems to have developed an extension to this, currently unnamed, by which he forms a wolf from the lightning which runs at the opponent; the wolf is connected to his hand by the lightning.

And as if that wasn't enough! Kakashi also has the ability to summon a pack of 8 nin-dogs, all with an incredible sense of smell and hearing, that can be used for tracking purposes. Also, these dogs can all speak human language. In a specific summon, Kakashi can use the blood of his opponent to send the dogs on that person; they will then bite the target to immobilize them, able to track by scent even when Kakashi can't see.
