Her big speech in this movie made the whole thing worth watching. This is, of course, not the worst thing I have watched her in (heehee), but I didn't really like the movie itself. She gives the (old) guy her young daughter is having a fling with a nice little jab. Jean is so awesome when she smokes, too. She it lethal and I love it. [Read it]
09. Pickles Oblong (The Oblongs)
Ah, Pickles. She is a drunken chain smoker who has no hair and is a worthless mother. I love her so. Her and Will Ferrell are magic in this animated series. If you haven't seen it, you are really missing out. [Watch it]
08. Margaret Thomas (The Yarn Princess)
Retarded has never looked so adorable. There are so many ways a that playing a 'special' mother of 4 boys. Her husband (Robert Pastorelli ♥) is diagnosed with schizophrenia and then the law tries to take her kids away. It is heart-breaking. You can't not believe that she is retarded. She's that talented.
07. Lana Gardner/Lorna Lenly (Frasier)
You gotta love Jean being able to play the 'one that got away' from Frasier. He is totally smitten with her and it turns out since high school she has changed into exactly the type of person he can't stand. Jean is so amazing at comedy it blows my mind. She won an Emmy for this role, ya dig?
06. Lorraine Sheldon (The Man Who Came to Dinner)
TONY. WORTHY. Jean was made for the stage. Lorraine is such a bitch and I love it. Watching Harriet Harris and Jean go at it is pure amazingness with the added thrill of Nathan Lane playing the gay man that he is :p If I would have seen this live and in person, I might have died. The phone call with Cosette may be the most brilliant thing she's ever done.
05. Regina Newly (Samantha Who?)
THANKS THE GODS Jean is on tv on a regular basis. Regina is such a horrible mother (I think this is a trend :p) who's trying to make amends since her daughter doesn't remember all the crappy things she did to her in the past. Regina loves Sam and is trying to fix her mistakes and cracking me up so hard while she does it.
04. Detective Sherry Regan (The District)
Jean with a gun and a badge. Jean with Craig T. Nelson. Jean with red hair. Jean who has an ex-husband who can't get over her. This is such a fun character. Her and Craig have amazing chemistry. This got her an Emmy nomination so just put aside the fact that you probably don't remember the show. This is the closest she has gotten to how kick-ass I know she is ♥
03. Charlene Frazier Stillfield (Designing Women)
This is where the original love affair began. I grew up watching this show and have seen every episode (many of them several hundred time). Charlene is sweet, caring and slightly stupid. It's more naive than anything, but it is adorable. [Watch it]
02. Ellie Walker (High Society)
Comedic genius. Seriously. This show is the funniest thing no one has ever seen and it is a tragedy. It is Jean Smart and Mary McDonnell playing bffs. HOW DOES IT GET BETTER THAN THIS!? It doesn't. It does NOT. I could (and do) watch these episodes over and over and over again. Ellie is completely self-centered and shallow and Dott (Mary) loves her anyway. They are amazing and hilarious and you should ♥ them. [Watch it]

Shocking, I know. Martha is tortured and sad and vulnerable and amazing. Jean pulled out all her acting chops for this role and the fact that she did not get an Emmy for it (she did get a nod) makes me insanely angry to this day (I have, however, forgiven Blythe Danner ♥). Whether you prefer her with Charles or Aaron, and I think you all know where I stand there, you can't deny how amazing her character is. Her situation breaks my heart and I will love her forever.
