Turns out the Family Reunion Of Awkward wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. At all. In fact, I'll go so far as to say that I had a good time.
Of course, it did help a lot that my brother's girlfriend turned out to be pretty much a carbon copy of my mother, character-wise, and they got on like a house on fire. There were a few awkward silences in the beginning, but later on after my younger brother came home conversation flowed so freely that we finally ended up going out to dinner together. AS A FAMILY. Which hasn't happened in, like, ever.
The thing with my brother is: he's always been my big brother. He's ten years older than me, and when I was younger I positively worshipped him, because he stood for everything I wanted to be at the time, i.e. grown-up. But just like there's a point in your life when you come to the conclusion that your parents aren't the all-knowing beacons of all that is good and pure in the world, so I did learn that my older brother isn't, necessarily, the ideal I should aspire to. He's a good enough bloke, but he definitely has his faults. And it seems that his new GF is more than up to the challenge of taking those on.
So, yeah. I think it might just work out okay in the end. :)
Moving on to that other entertaining family show, Merlin.
I didn't hate it as much as I thought I would. Anyone who has seen my face as I watched the Slitheen invade my beloved Doctor Who, knows how I think about burping and farting for comedic effect. So I was not really looking forward to this one. At all.
LIKED:
- Clever clever Arthur, figuring things out all on his little lonesome! I loved how you could clearly see he believed unconditionally in Merlin's innocence, and how he confronted Goblin!Gaius. Love love love. <3
- Uther and his bitchin' hat. I loved Anthony Head's facial expressions so hard. Especially as I kept thinking about how many times they'd had to do that over and over again because he'd burst out giggling.
- Someone finally called Morgana on her bullshit. She genuinely wobbled for a moment there.
- ANGRY MERLIN! OMG I CAN'T EVEN. He's always just been adorable and dorky, and then he goes into showdown mode with the Goblin and it was deeply hot. GUH.
HATED:
- Morgana almost made it through the episode without smirking and I was sort of tolerating her again until the last bit, when she smirked at Merlin going to get dead, and I hated her again.
- We will not speak about my utter mortification about burping and farting and slobbering and donkey noises (although to be fair Bradley rocked the hell out of that scene).
- Why did the Goblin have to be CG? WHYYY.
Oh well. That was my weekend. Off to watch some Supernatural reruns now. Night, all!
