Put things in perspective

Jul 07, 2005 14:32

All of us will occasionally whine about the small things that are going wrong with our lives in our ljs. Some people do this more than others. Whether its friends, bfs/gfs, parents, or just the unfairness of life we do ( Read more... )

but the thing is, we don't live in rwanda or columbia or anything.

we live right here, in holt michigan.

this is our life.
this is everything.
this is all there is to it.

why should i care about some starving kid a million miles away when i just stubbed my toe?
i know he's got bigger problems, but fuck, my toe hurts right now, right here

if people start thinking about everythign on the grand scale, woudln't that make their own lives, not just problems, trivial?

who wants to live a trivial life?
one where you're just one in 6 billion people that will never accomplish anything to help that starving kid? who wants to live that way?

might as well live with what you've got, positives and negatives, and just keep things in perspective a lil bit.

you never know when some drunk asshole might get behind the wheel.

that's how you keep problems in perspective.
by having a huge problem hit close to home, not a million big problems too far away to see.

This isnt everything though, and its not all there is to it.....you could look at it that way if you really wanted, but we're not alone. Sure your toe may hurt right now, but that will go away. The thing is how long will it be before another big thing hits here. I know you have a different perspective, but thats okay. It's the beauty of being individuals ( ... )

Just because other people are worse off, doesn't mean our problems are trivial, I think that a lot of times emotional pain is at least as severe as physical pain, and the thing is it's a lot harder to heal, because you can't simply put a bandage on it, or do some surgery to try and fix it ( ... )

Also, you simply don't have the power to fix everything, I barely have the money to live, rent, food, etc. It's easy to think you can help everyone, when you've got it easy, but theres plenty of people right here, struggling, I'm okay, I'm living, but I dont have money to spend feeding all the children of the world, and most of those foundations bla bla cup of coffee a day don't spend that money correctly.

Once more, It's not wrong to care about yourself, you HAVE to care about yourself, because if you're not okay, if you're not feeling well, or are depressed or something, then it's gonna be REALLY hard to help other people, its not wrong to make yourself happy, its good to feel sympathetic, but we cant stop terrorists from doing that shit, its really sad, but they're going to do it as long as i'm a christian, they'll hate me, and other christians, and westerners, and i'm not going to stop living so i can focus on them, because thats exactly what they want.

Terrorism will always exist and there's nothing we can do to change this.

You're right though, most people don't have the money or time to help. I can understand those people who honestly are just trying to make it in the world. A lot of people just don't care though. They may have money, skills, or time to help in a tiny way, but it's not their problem.

I'm a senior in high school. As far as I'm concerned I'm way too sheltered. Answers still come easily, but maybe this also gives me an innocence and clarity that's missing from the "adult" world. Sometimes things are simpler than people think they should be.

people do have serious problems here, and they need as much help as anyone overseas. In a way we should be more responsible for helping people here just because its so much closer to home. I'm not saying that everyone should stop there lives here and join the peace corp. I guess what bothers me is when you see people who have amazing lives, and then turn around and try to tell you how horrible it is. There are people here who have lived and had experiences that I can never imagine. By what right do I have to complain about my life, when they have gone through so much worse. I'm tired of seeing people who don't have anything wrong try to take all the attention from those who really need help ( ... )

At some point in time, someone will have the worst life ever imaginable. I'm not sure who that is, but it would really suck. I don't know what would happen to this person, but when two things happen, 1 is worse, and 1 is better. This person has gotten so many of the first... that it turns out to be the worst life ever.

What right does anyone else have to complain, when that person has gone through that much worse.

There's a difference between saying that it's wrong of people to not care about what's going on overseas, and saying that people that can make a difference should do more that they don't.

If you're trying to make an effective argument, you should focus more on what you're actually trying to prove.

Do you know who I am?
Do I have a right to complain?
