What are the chances?

Lylith hung up the phone then made her way to her balcony door and unlocked it. Her steps were sluggish and her eyes were a little squinty in the dim light. The young woman yawned as she made her way to the kitchen and made herself and Lo a cup of hot cocoa. She highly doubted Lo would drink it, but that was fine, she'd just drink it for him. Bartholomew loitered on her steps for a little while, hand set on the doorknob as he rolled the pros and cons of going inside around in his head. He had an original piece of newspaper in his hand that he had swiped from the library, and this date seemed to contain everything he needed to convince Lylith of.

Finally he knocked, two quick raps, sure to not wake her father.

Lylith set the cups of cocoa on the dresser and opened the door for him, smiling gently. "I left it unlocked for you." She held a cup of the hot cooca and scratched her head. "Do you want any?"

He shook his head - it wasn't rude of him to refuse her food or drink anymore, now that she knew his condition. Without hesitation he held the newspaper leaf out to her. "Here. I.. thought you might be interested.."

She took the newspaper article and turned on a light, her eyes adjusting for a few minutes before she began reading over the article. She would have thought that an Ethan dying in a fire was just coincidence, until she saw the picture. She stared for a minute, and apparently that was the only body that wasn't recovered after the destructive fire. She sat down on her bed, confusion scrawled across her face. "Where'd you get it?"

"The library. Reference section; I wasn't supposed to take it home, but I.. was afraid if he found out about the section, he'd destroy it." Did that mean she believed him finally?

"I'll ask him about it, okay?" She went over to her printer and made a copy of the article, handing the original back to Bartholomew. "Here." She sighed and curled up on her bed. How had she managed to get in two relationships that involved vampires. and one after the other? Maybe she just wasn't meant to have boyfriends.

"You can go home if you want."

That was the shortest visit he had ever experienced. Even that occasion where a client of his stuck around only for a quick handjob was longer than this meeting. Bartholomew stood there, somewhat astounded, and nodded.
"You can't ask him about it. He'll deny it and hurt you for interfering."

"He won't hurt me, Bartholomew. He's not like that."

"How can you say he's isn't like that when you don't even know what his true personality is like?" He didn't mean to sound critical, but perhaps it didn't matter if he sounded as such. "Promise me you won't ask him about it."

"Bartholomew, I don't understand what in hell you want me to do? You're constantly on my case about it, but now you won't let me ask him about it?" She rolled her eyes and patted the bed next to her. She had a pretty good feeling Lo would be staying a while.

He sat down, chewing on his lip. "Do your own investigation, or believe what Josh and I tell you. But he's.. Ethan doesn't strike me as the type of guy who would appreciate you questioning his history.."

"Well, maybe I'll just show him the copy of the article and ask him what he thinks about it. I'll save the vampire part for a later date. And just so you know..." She turned around and glared at Bartholomew, eyebrows furrowed in frustration. "If he breaks up with me and there's nothing at all odd about him, I'm blaming it on you. And I may not forgive you for that one." With that said she rolled back over and mumbled into her pillow.

"Stay with me until I fall asleep?" She couldn't help but be a little freaked out now, and as tiny as Lo was, he still made her feel comfortable.

She asked so goddamn much of him, knowing he loved her and she couldn't be with him. Yes, he'd stay with her until she fell asleep, but he'd be all the pissier for it. His hand wandered to her hair, hovering over her head before stroking through it - moral standards of relationships didn't matter to him, or he just didn't acknowledge them. "Yes, I'll stay.."

"Thank you, Lo." She closed her eyes and tried to make herself tired, but relentless thoughts of Ethan traveled through her mind, and she couldn' t bring herself to rest assured.

She thought of something, something that she would need an answer to. She swallowed the lump that had formed in her throat because of nerves and turned her head slightly, eyes searching the dark. "I-If he is a vampire, do you think he's like you. Do you think he only drinks as necessary, or do you think he's the bloodthirsty-murderous type?"

Bartholomew was listening, seated on the edge of the bed, staring off into space. His light hair reflected moonlight seeping through her curtains, but the remainder of him seemed dark, constrained. "He doesn't give me that feeling. He.. Lylith, there is a nearby coven, and they hate me. I'm an abomination to them, since I'm not fully.. vampiric. And Ethan reminds me a lot of 'Joseph Lauderdale', a vampire I ran in to a while back. That thought doesn't give me comfort.."

"What does that mean. Does that just mean he's after you, then?"
